So i don't have the exhaust on yet but figured I would try to see if she would fire up. I hooked up the existing key switch, voltage regulator and resister. I have real good spark but she wont fire up. I just get flames out of the manifolds and carb. No gas tank, just pouring gas into the vent hole of carb to fill the bowl. When I turn distributor clockwise she just cranks with some smoke out of exhaust, counter clockwise i get the pops and flames. Any thoughts ? I just want to fire her up for a second, I'll do the break in when i get the exhaust system on.

Also have a small drip out of the throttle shaft area. Any thoughts on how to fix ?

May have to turn the distributor a little one way or the other.

If you have "flames out of the carb and exhaust " I would think your timing is off, some where.

recheck your wire sequence. Your timing is off somewhere and if you have fuel dripping out your throttle shaft it got too much gas.

Since you did a total rebuild on motor, you might want to do a compression test to make sure valves are closing. Then do as others posted recheck wires and timing. Good luck.

Today I checked all the plug wires ......again......and all were good. I took the plug out of # 1 cylinder and cranked to top dead center. Then turned crank to 5 degrees BTDC as the manual states. I then put the plug in the plug wire, turned on the ignition and turned the distributor until the plug sparked. Put the plug back in and snugged up the distributor. So im confident the timing is right. At this point my battery is too weak so once I get a new battery I'll try her again.

Damn ! I was hoping no one would ask :-/ when setting #1 piston at top dead center to set the timing it was on the exhaust stroke not the compression stroke, soooooooo like I read here a gazillion times I turned the distributor 180 degrees and she fired right up. So now my expert Jeep restorer status is in in question and my pride is destroyed ;-)

Ehh, it happens. Not a big deal, I have made way simpler mistakes. All that matters is that it runs. Good job!
