You only need to put a film of lube on the distributor cam since the rest will get wiped off anyway.

The timing should show steady, if it wanders that generally indicates timing chain stretch, at least that is what I have been told.

Timing chain slack check. Put a socket and breaker bar on crank nut and rotate engine (direction it normally runs) to TDC. Gently pull the breaker bar backwards until slack is pulled out of chain, which you will feel when you hit the cam resistance. Look at your timing marks. If you are less than 20* you will be OK for more driving. If 20* or slightly over then consider replacing fairly soon. If quite a bit over then change now.

Your arms are calibrated better than mine are. I understand that it will add to the freeplay a very small amount but I generally just watch the distributor shaft.

I was going to mention the Pertronix unit. Cleared up all of the ignition issues in my 185 K motor. I would also check the color of the plugs on each side. Did it run fine until you put the Pertronix in? You have to remove the dist to install the parts and I remember Patrick saying that some of the rings were mismarked so the timing would only correct for one bank of the motor.
Yes, no cam lube for the Pertronics. I bought the Commando around 7 years ago did all of the dist stuff in it. I haven't had to adjust anything in it, yet.
