Parts CJ5 Jeep

    I declined to offer on the "prospector" phantom cj5, went to look at another one which was totaled in a tornado. No wheels/tires, no bumpers, tub is completely mangled, frame is bent up at rear springs. Its been stored outside for 6 years-so rust has eaten everything, and surely t-case and t-14 full of water. Unknown mileage, no info re gearing/posi etc....seller first said $1500. Obviously way overpriced...what would the hive offer? 258, one barrel, radiator appears usable, as do the pulleys, damper, and exhaust manifold-all which I need.

    Sounds to me like your helping him clean up his yard and he should give you the jeep for scrap price. That's what I would offer.

    I would not touch this unless I needed some useful and scarce part from it.

    I agree with Walt, this should go for scrap prices, maybe less if you haul it away.

    Where are you located? It matters re price.

    If this is a '72-75 it will have drum brakes. If it has the optional 4.27 axles, those are worth a few hundred bucks. However, most got 3.73s. A '72-75 258/T-14/3.73 is nothing special - a stripped-down basic model. If it's a '77 or later, the front axle should have disk brakes and would be worth something - depending on your location. The rear axle is an AMC 20 from 1976 on - a cigar butt. A '76-79 will have a T-150 (Ford passenger car transmission) regardless of engine.

    If it has power steering, those bits have value as a conversion ensemble.

    I would avoid a used radiator unless I got it really really cheap or free. Today, new radiators are a commodity item that is built overseas (including Mexico) and hardly anybody repairs radiators now. So even if the radiator is pretty good, you may find that it's too expensive to repair it. Price out a new radiator. A re-core will cost more than a replacement, typically. You would only re-core a radiator if there was no other source.

    Since all you want are the bits on the motor and maybe the radiator, you could look on car-part.com and price out what these parts would cost you from a commercial yard. A general rule of thumb is that used in good condition is half-new, and private-party is even less than that. And you are taking on quite a lot of risk and effort to part out a vehicle, even if you can use the parts yourself.

    Who is it here in the NW that parts out Jeeps? I don't recall offhand ... Daryl? He has a lot of stuff, and it sounds to me like the parts you need are not particularly scarce parts.

    Yeah, I offered scrap price. He did not accept $350, nor offer a counter offer. I will not go up. Yes, I have to haul it (no wheels, i have trailer and he has tractor)
    Located just off Lookout Mountain in Al/Ga/Tn Chattanooga corner. It obviously has some silly sentimental value for him.
    Grille is ok, no rust. Hood survived, mostly, and is much better than mine. Left fender is "maybe ok".
    I dont really trust the engine-except for crank and rod for stroker, perhaps, although oil looked clean and full.
    It has a tiny stupid chrome air filter on it that the boy put on it. I believe he ragged it out pretty good, mountain boy with a jeep toy his daddy gave him.
    They cannot-or will not- tell me mileage...numbers are sun-faded.
    As a spare parts jeep it might make sense for me, axles, shafts, tc/trans identical to mine.
    Mine will see heavy off-road use, pulling logs up from the pond site, and as a means of traversing over the brow down to the creek on my acreage.
    As a plus, the tub would make excellent yard art!!!! Fill it up with topsoil, and plant lilies!

    I just went through this. If its garbage, garbage men get PAID to take it away. If there is nothing or very little of value and doesn't even roll, its garbage and you're cleaning out his trash. Now, if there are parts that you want and the guy would be willing sell those parts, thats different.

    I live in NW Georgia, and I'm really needing a rear ended for my 72 cj5. Could you tell me where to find this wreck and see if I can have some luck with them?

    If you have a '72 cj, it should have one of the most desired D44's out there. How is/was it damaged?

    He was (Over)pricing the parts separately at $300 each axle, TC, trans, etc. I was concerned because of the frame damage, the springs were mangled, the frame pretzeled, and likely axle bent from my further exam. (it was thrown in a tornado and then a semi truck trailer smashed on top)
    Its located near Scottsboro, Al.

    Thanks for info, probably pass. My rear ended, has a very bad shake that starts at 30 mph, with the rear end on stands, the left wheel wobbles and will turn then stop and then turn again intermittently. Pulled backer plate and all of the gears have a lot of play in them.

    I'd venture a guess bent axle shaft, Grif...i would be less concerned about worn spiders or side gears. They can take quite a bit of wear.
