After getting the carb behaving I took the rig across town to visit some family and made it back with no real drama. I did notice it's marking its' territory pretty well though. You can smell the oil while driving too. I crawled underneath and it looks like it's engine oil and transmission oil both leaking. A lot of it appears to be coming from around the pan gasket so I've got that on order. A lot seems to be on the flywheel too and I can see where it's been flinging it off. I'm thinking it's time for a main seal replacement. Since I'm already taking the pan off for the gasket it would seem like a good time to do it. Has anyone done a 225 main seal before with the engine still in? Is it possible? I've done it on some SBCs before. The engine pan also has a crack in it the PO tried to weld up but it looks like that is seeping too. I'll have to address that while it's off. I got a picture of all the oil it's throwing that is finding its way into the cab. All the dots on the floor, dash, and windshield weren't there before the trip. There is some all the way up on the windshield glass.

Yep. I have this same issue, but I don't understand how it would get outside the bell housing on yours. Mine shuts drips out the clutch pan. I hope it's not the engine and coming from the tranny instead as that is going to be up for a rebuild soon anyhow.

You need to figure out where it is comming from, trans lube and engine oil dont smell or feel the same.
I can't claim that my 3B doesn't leak but I buy motor oil and gear lube in 5 Gal containers.
I hope you understand this is somewhat of a joke But I don't park it in friends driveways.

Just a suggestion, and you've probably already done this, but make sure your PCV system is working. My V6 used to leak really bad until I replaced the hose and the valve and routed the hose directly to a port on the manifold. The oil was being pushed out past the seals. I was sure my rear main seal was shot, but now the motor doesn't leak at all.

It's definitely leaking both. It looks like the tiny oil pan on the transfer case is weeping from some bolts, there is oil dripping from between the trans and transfer case housings, and there is oil dripping from the rear drum E-brake housing. The transmission was newly rebuilt and only has maybe 100 miles on it. Maybe the seals aren't broken in yet?

I don't have PCV anything on the engine. There is a grommet in the valve cover for one but nothing there. I suppose that would be a cheap fix to try!

Just a thought...Have you changed the oil filter recently? I've seen old seals peel away from the filter during a change and the new one won't seat right causing oil to sling all over everything. People search forever looking for a crack or replace the main seal only to have it continue.

I have a PCV in the valve cover but it ends there. I would like to hook up the PCV system but things seem to be fine with no motor oil leaks, at least that what I think. I do get some oil drips but it looks more like years of crud being cooked off the more I drive the CJ. I took it on my longest drive with it last week and found some new spot of oil sitting in the crevices on top of the water pump right under the distributor...That's a new one. I'm afraid to investigate...Things have been going so well. As for the transfer case and tranny, they're marking their territory since draining and refilling???

You should definitely put a hose on that valve and hook it to the back of the carb or the intake manifold. Your PCV system will create negative pressure in the crankcase, helping keep the oil in; but it's real function, as I understand it, is to return blowby gases to the combustion chambers, thereby reducing pollution and preventing sludge production.

the hole on the bottom bolt which attaches the transfer case to the transmission is cleverly designed to go into the oil in the bottom of the transmission.
Upon rebuild, mine leaked pretty good. I took another bolt the same size t use as a plug, unscrewed the original bolt, popped the plug in, wrapped the original bolt with five or six turns of teflon tape, did the exchange again and tightened it up. Only lost a couple of tablespoons of oil, and that leak is fixed. I am getting some seepage from the speedometer cable attachment point.
