I have decoded the VIN and it lines up with what I have in the Jeep. I am trying to determine the interior colors and exterior color.

This is what the VIN plate looks like.

    G500139 G4000
    VDO 999 498
    J4F83FTE27983 8300

Interestingly enough there were two brass plaques on the dash. One was a parts list that described the drivetrain and and its capacities. The other gives a lot of info on delivery dates, warrantee info and says United States Property.

I would post pics but seeing the info is very difficult and wouldn't help. I am curious about this jeep and finally have the time to start asking these questions.

    Thank you in advance.

999 is a special paint code. 498 is buff vinyl, bucket seats.

Can I go to a Jeep dealership and find out the color or am I sunk?

Baby blue--guess it isn't going original.

After 42 years, it's unlikely that Jeep will be able to help you. You could take the Sales Order Number G500139 and the SSR&O number G4000 and, if the documentation still existed, you could determine what was done when this Jeep was ordered. I expect the color is a special for a government agency. IMO it's unlikely that these records exist, or it they exist, are accessible. If you want to return the Jeep to close to original color, I think you could pick a color close to the original and no one but you would know that it's not 100% original.

G4000 likely means something, since this Jeep appears to have been built as an agency vehicle. But I don't know where to look to decode it.

I suggest that you look at the pre-mixed standard colors from Kirker or TCP Global and pick something that you like and which fits with the history of the Jeep.
