I got my 55 cj witht the 134 running today. problem is it is smoking. I was wondering what oil and how many quarts are supposed to be in this and what weight. for some reason I remember someone telling me that they need a straight weght oil becasue they are almost like farm motors. also my disrubter is loose. I don;t see a clamp or holdown on there. Is there somthing that holds it in place so it does not get out of time.

There is a plate on the bottom of the distributor with a bolt going into the distributor body and one holding the plate to the block. Don't know about the smoke, haven't tried to start mine yet.

What makes a "farm"motor different from any other and require st. wt. oil??

No difference, still fuel fire and air, just less emissions crap on a farm motor. What color is the smoke? Black is fuel, bluish white is oil, and plain ole white is usually steam.

I thought it was oil smoke but the more I think about it it may be form water getting into the cylinders. the raditor fluid seems a little oilly buit there isn't any noticable water in the oil. the plugs are black though from what appears to be oil. Maybe I will take the head off and check things out in the near futore. I have had head gaskets go bad on race car motors so Maybe I will chack this one out. I am leaning towards rebuilding the motor anyway

Another possibility may be your oil is thinned out fromrepeated no starts. Check the oil to see if it smells like gas.

Check your radiator water. if it has a little antifreeze, then an oil leak will turn the color a sickly muddy brown. Could then be head gasket.

However, your comment about your dist. being loose can also cause smoking if it has becaome badly out of time. (Fuel)

Also could be tires motor in need of rings.

If it has been sitting up for a while, I would change the oil and put some marvel mystry oil in the crankcase. Run it for a couple of hours and see if some the smoking does not go away. I have had some piston rings stick to the pistons and not flex. The Marvel Mystry oil fixed it!!!

The oily substance in your radiator may have been a previous owner who may have put some Bars Leak are something similar in it.

Don’t assume the worst yet. Give her some time to wake up and tell you what is bothering her. She will. Hopefully it will not be an engine over haul.

changed the oil toonight and put some marvel mystery oil in it. it isn't smoking as bad now but I need to run it longer. no muffler on it so the neighbors I am sure aren't happy anyway. I also did a compression test. I got 90,120,120,80. The 80 was the worst plug with oil all over it. the tow with 120 just dark from running rich adn the 60 only a small ttrace of oil. we'll see what the marvel mystery oil does and then I'll let ya know. I've built big block chryslers in the past so this little f-head dosen't bother me but just tryign to get some more life out of her.
