First off, I just found this board and am new here. What a great resource!

I've got a '73 CJ5 with an AMC 304 and a few upgrades (Edelbrock intake, timing chain, cam, Mallory Unilite Dist, and Holley Projection). I've recently installed the projection and am having problems with it running really rich. I keep fouling spark plugs. Does anyone have experience with tuning this thing so it runs properly without fouling plugs? I recently ordered the closed loop kit (O2 sensor) but have not installed it yet as the instructions say it should be running properly before installing the closed look kit. It seemed to run a bit better when I had splitfire plugs installed. I think I have autolite plugs installed now and it hits on about 5 pistons.

Thanks in advance for any ideas or suggestions.

Check to make sure the Throttle Position Sensor is set to the proper voltage. I can't remember what it is off the top of my head but it's in the owner's manual (and it tells you how to measure it). If you don't have the manual, you can get one here ---> http://www.holley.com/TechDocs/Instructions/Holley/Holley.aspx all the other settings on the Projection are based off the TPS setting. Another thing about the Holley TPS.. it does not like to get wet. I got mine wet in a deep mudhole and it went on the blitz and richened up the mixture to the point of sputtering/smoking...

    Casey,

Are you running the 2BBL 670cfm setup? You might try adjusting the fuel pressure although, for a V8 it should be ok like it is. Did you buy the system new? Make sure the rocker switch settings inside the ECU are set for small block and not big block, because the fuel curve is different. Like BESRK said if it gets wet it runs really bad (mine did to with this last rain  ) The TPS setting if I recall is .63 volts at idle. This will make a huge difference in how it runs.
I am running the 670 unit on my 4.3 Chevy V6 and it runs fine even with the 80 pph injectors in it. In fact it won't hardly run at all with 57 pph injectors. I would like to try some 70pph injectors, but it's not real high on my priority list right now :D
If you have any more questions feel free to ask.
Oh and make sure your return line is large enough, and has no blockage. If it's restricted or too small it will cause hi fuel pressure on your feed line=bad.

Thanks to everyone for the reply. I've checked my TPS voltage at idle and it is dead on. As for the small block vs big block operation there is a wire that you use to indicate small block operation. I can't remember which one it is but I'm sure it is wired correctly. I didn't set any rocker switch though. I'll check this to ensure it is set correctly. John...where is this rocker switch and does it indicate big block vs small block or is it numbered or something?

    Thanks again for the replies.

On mine the rocker switches (2) are inside the ECU. There was actually a diagram on the outside case of the ECU telling which way they are supposed to be.
Do you have one of the newer systems? Maybe they did away with it on a newer digital system. It would be really helpful to have the instruction sheet.
Otherwise you might look at return line or fuel pressure issues, because that setup should work real good on your V8.
On mine to check fuel pressure you have to splice into the feed line right where it goes into the throttle body, to get an accurate measurement. Should be around 13-17 PSI IIRC correctly.

I replaced the plugs again, adjusted the ECU, and added the closed loop kit which is simply an O2 sensor. My Jeep has found new life! Anyone else out there have the projection system I highly recommend the closed loop kit.

I'm going to the Barnwell Mountain Recreation Area next Saturday and will see how everything works out on the trail.

    Casey ;)

Cool deal. I should check to see if they make a closed loop for my older system. I don't think they do though.
