V6 running too high

    I have a '67 with the dauntless v6 engine, and recently when I start it up, it runs way too high, like it's getting too much gas. I don't know what kind of rpms it's at because I don't have a tachometer but it's no where near an idle speed or really anything close to it. I just installed a new fuel pump, but I don't know if that's the problem. I've also taken the carb apart and cleaned it really well but the problem remains.

    This hasn't always been a problem as I've had the jeep running and driving before, but after letting it sit for a while it wouldn't start, which led to me replacing the fuel pump and cleaning the carb, which is when it started happening.

    What carb do you have. The 2g rochester is a manual choke and that is connected by a rod down to the fast idle cam. Is that all working good?

    Its the Rochester 2g, and all of the linkages with the choke and where the accelerator hook up look good.

    Looks good you say, but is the fast idle cam dropping back to allow the throttle to close?

    If I shine a light down into the carb I can see the valves are closed and when I give it had they open up

    Idle adjustment screw backed out . will it change RPM . Idle adjustment screws turned all the way in . one at a time . will engine slow down or die . Walt was talking about fast Idle cam for choke linkage , is it stuck .

    Did you remove the carb to clean it?
    Did you replace the base gasket? Is it the correct one?

    If you have done a recent carb rebuild, check to make sure the internal accelerator pump rod is in correctly. If it is in wrong, it can hang up and cause the throttle to stick open.

    As mentioned ..............Choke or Vacuum leak.......the leak could also be at the base of the carb or at the manifold seal at the heads...........if you have a non-flammable carb spray , spray a little around the base of the carb , and around the carb and the intake gaskets or any threaded plugs in the manifold while the motor is running at fast Idle...........If there is an intake leak once the spray hit's that point a noticeable rpm & tone change will result. Do a little area at a time.........don't just flood it everywhere.

    I think it could be the gasket, so I'm getting a new one and will try that tomorrow.

    be sure the "dash pot" is not hanging up.

    I rebuilt the carburetor and got a new gasket, which rules out a vacuum leak between the carb and intake manifold. I started it up and it ran rough and backfired a lot. Then I tried to start it again ten minutes later and it sounded like a gun went off in the exhaust, so I haven't started it since.

    With those symtoms, It sounds like your timing is off a bit.
