Throttle and Choke Cable 1955 CJ5

Here's a few photos from my stash so you can see more clearly what the bracket and clamps look like. I also plan to have a hand throttle, I figure it may come in handy at times when I need three feet.

Here is my hand throttle bracket that I made today.

 

My kind of fabrication, drill two holes and make a bend!

 

Needs rust.....

Here is the new dual cable holding bracket. I just test fit it, and it seems it will work. I have to sand off a few sharp edges, and I should be good to go.

If anyone wonders, I took a piece of 1/16 thick aluminum stock, I think 1/2 inch wide or so.

Then I mounted a screwdriver shaft with the same diameter as the cable upside down in a vice and bent the aluminum around it.

Cut it to size and drilled a hole through it.

Then I got a little bit longer bolt.

I could probably have spent some more time and bent the aluminum in a more circular shape at the bottom, but I am just trying to get a basic set up that will work good until I have a bit more time or until I find the actual piece!

Now I have to go get a barrel stop.

 

Be sure that throttle cable coil isn't so close to the homemade bracket that it interferes with the operation of the throttle!

 

You are aware the throttle return spring is in the wrong location, right?

 

Thanks I knew it didn't look correct, but this is really my first Jeep of this era, frankly first vehicle of this era, so I don't always know!

I searched and found this chart... appears to be a spring on the bottom driver side of the linkage pulling down (14).

I would have never guessed this location!

I just cut a spring and put it there and it works good.

Yeah, so far it seems as though it will work, but I will analyze and over analyze this before I trust it. I will get the barrel stop today when I get a chance and I can get a better idea of how it all works.

It isn't really as close as the picture suggests. Hard to take a good shot down there.

 

Just make sure the throttle has full travel and doesn't hit or bind up on that cable coil. Looks like you have it extending several inches past the clamp, but maybe it's the photo.

 

Yes, it does extend several inches past the clamp, but I had to get it close enough to the throttle bracket so that is could be connected. Are you saying I should I strip the coil part away and just have the inner cable itself running down there?

I did move the throttle to full throttle and brought it back with both the foot pedal and the hand throttle and they both seem to operate without binding.

The hand throttle isn't quite as smooth as I would like, so maybe further adjustment is necessary.

I wish I had a complete non-molested 1955 that I could look at in person and know exactly how it was supposed to be...but then I guess that would take the fun out of it.

This Jeep is a real mess... but slowly it is coming back.
