I have always wondered what these brackets on the rear bumper are for - circled in the photo:

They also have a little chain hanging from them - any ideas knowledge on the subject?

For all I know it could be an aftermarket bumper, but it looks similar to many brochure photos I have been able to dig up - but cant see enough detail on, to compare these too.

That's what I was thinking, maybe the center attachment was removed with the addition of the ball-hitch plate?

Pete, You are right on the money. I was looking at older military willy's photos and the bumperetes and shackle mounts are right there! Dont know if this was a military bumper that was swapped on or if it was a factory option. I don't know what the possibility of this jeep being a military version is??

The drawbar arrangement looks civilian, and the M38AI did not normally have a tailgate. Your tail lights are civilian.

There are many other body and frame clues if you study up on it. Hinged front grill, machine gun mount under the tub floor, black-out lights, 24 volt waterproof electrical system, etc etc.

Sherriff's Department? I did see a gold tone in the paint on the rear of the Jeep, right? Extra holes along the bottom fold of the dash board for radio brackets?
