I pulled the carter today to try and fix it. The problem was I had no idea what was wrong with it. So I pulled it apart, laid all the parts out on the kitchen table (the wife hates it when I work on carbs). That's when I realized all the parts are not there. The accelerator pump check ball was missing, so was the small weight that sits on top of it. I dug out a old holley kit and used the check ball and weight from it. I didn't have a kit for the carter so I cut new gaskets. When I checked the throttle shaft it was very loose. So I pulled the throttle plate out, removed the shaft and polished it. Then it was off to the shop. The shaft measured .310, so I made a pair of bushings that were .312 ID and .377 OD. Then I put the carb base in the mill and bored it to .375. After I pressed the bushings, I then reamed the bushings to make sure they aligned with each other. When I reassembled and installed the carb it works great.

I'm still looking at fuel injection. I think it'll be a fun project. But for the moment at least I can drive it. I've owned this jeep for about 5 years and today was the first time I've driven it on the road. It runs great.:stout:

"The accelerator pump check ball was missing, so was the small weight that sits on top of it."

Classic example of a very common "problem" with the Carter YF. People will turn the carb upside down and lose those parts and never realize it.
