Wow, need wiring info and pics...help

Rebuilding my 57 CJ5 from the ground up. Frame and undercarriage complete and done. Body on. Now I am trying to figure out a wiring harness that I bought from Walcks. Great harness, poor diagrams and instructions. I can follow a wiring diagram, but their instructions leave much to be desired. Can anyone please send me multiple pics of your under hood wiring for a CJ5. I need it all, head and tail lights to junction block, dimmer switch, starting switch to???. ALL of it. This jeep has a one wire alternator that eliminated a voltage regulator. I should have taken better pics when I was disassembling, but I did not. Really, anything you can send me will help. Hello tylerprk, I would be more than happy to help you. I just installed my new, custom made wiring harness, from Walcks on a '67 CJ6. I'm sure there really no difference between the 5 and 6 except for perhaps the length of wires. Not sure if the years will make much of a difference or not, but at least it will give you something to go on. Now Im using the original Motorola Altanator so that will make a difference as well, but only for that part of wiring.
I agree with you as far as the harness, very nice, however, the directions are kinda vague, at least for people like me. I ended up posting questions on this forum and calling the good people of Walcks a few times for help. Turns out they did make a little oops on some connections and for got to send me some extra directions for it. But all is good. I've got everything to work except one brake light, I was told the issue is in my turn signal switch. It may be noted too that I did not hook up my speedomoter cluster as of yet so I can't help you there.

That would be a big help. No rush on this CJ. Been working on it for 3 years now. You are right about the rats nest. Ugly, but functional

I am going to be tackling this project very soon and I plan on purchasing from Walcks. I was unaware of the diagram problems. Would there be any way for me to get any of this info also? It would be much appreciated!

 

I'll double down on this as well. I'll be rewiring in the next couple weeks.

I was going to go with the EZ kit though. My Jeep is not period correct so, I didn't see any issues in saving a couple hundred bucks!

 

It would be better if you guys could post your pictures in the forum. Then everybody would have access to them.

 

I got my harness from Walcks on sale. It was a deal. The harness is very well made, could just use some marking as to what is what. In my humble opinion.

 

I also thought th Walcks harness price was pretty fair. I don think it was anymore than the others. When you order it, they send you an email with some questions about as to where certain items are located in the jeep, what alternator you will be using and such. Then it's made. Very pleased with it.

 

While I like Carl and wouldn't steer business away from him if you lack the ability to sort it out without instructions I would suggest a hot-rod harness or whatever you would call them. I used Carl's harness on my 47 but on the 67 went with one from Summit. The wires are labeled as to front right turn signal and such and while it does take some time it's not too bad. You can get a harness with way more circuits than a stock requirement and use the others for driving lights and such.

As requested, I will post some pictures of the wiring harness that I purchased from Walcks. It was made to fit a 1967 CJ6.
I do not claim to be a professional on wiring what so ever. It took me several days to complete with help from this forum as well as a few calls to the good people at Walcks.
Let these few facts about the electical system on my jeep be known; 1. I am experiencing a little lag or slur when turning the ingnition key, however, I was told it is a starter issue. 2. I do not have the speedometer cluster connected as of yet.
Other than that, everything; headlights, parking lights blinkers, ect...works fine.
If at anytime you notice something that I did wrong, not wired correctly, or have any suggestions on improving how something was done, please feel free to point it out.






Ill start here at the starter. Now I have a Delco starter, and a Motorola alternator. When ordering the harness, Walcks emailed a questionnaire. It was asking for general information such as; where the ignition was located, what type of alternator is on the jeep, location of headlight switch, type of distributor, type of starter, ect. Make sure you fill out this questionnaire with the correct information, they will make a customized harness based on the information that you give them.

The first picture shows three wires; red that connects to the solenoid battery terminal ( larger middle terminal ) a purple which connects to he solenoid start terminal ( terminal located on drivers side looking at it from the front of jeep ) and a green that connects to the solenoid ( passenger side terminal )
The second picture is simply the same thing except it shows the positive battery cable is also connected to the solenoid battery terminal. And the thick black wire that you see is my ground wire from the engine block to the frame.

 

Just looking at the two pictures, I see your connections look dry. I would consider placing some dielectric grease in the connections (especially the high amperage ones, battery to starter, all the grounds, etc.) to help delay the connection becoming corroded or dirty.

 

Thank you for the heads up on using the grease to help prolong corrosion. I will take care of that ASAP!



this picture is of the voltage regulator. This one is pretty easy since the wire harness came with a plug that connects to the regulator. Keep in mind that I am using the original alternator. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you have an upgrade on the alternator such as a Delco 10si, you will not need this.
Once again, you will need to let Walcks know what kind of alternator you are running or plan to run in your jeep.

Sooooo, I really received great info here. Wiring still needs a little work, but the 57 starts!!! Time to fix up the house, pacify wife and make life good. All with an ulterior motive of getting back to the Jeep

Thanks to RJ for some great info and pics. All of my wiring is now working as it should. Still on the floorboard, but works perfectly. Finally got caught up with honey do list and graduated my last from college. Now back to the 57 in earnest. Once I figure out how to post a pick I will.
