Points distributor? (Delco or Prestolite - looks like Prestolite). The odd-fire distributor will have an asymmetric ground cam lobe (45-75-45-75-45-75 degrees). Or post up the distributor number.

IMO it's rather unlikely you have the wrong distributor. If I wanted to get a new distributor, I'd get a Delco in place of the Prestolite. Easy to source a reman. But check that you have which engine you think you do first. You probably have the factory odd-fire 225, but the Buick V6s are drop-in replacements for each other, and the the Buick was also made in an even-fire version.

There is a web page around with engine ID for the Jeep/Buick V6s. I don't have a pointer to it handy, but someone here will.

It's the Prestolite dist....unlike the Delco unit, AFAIK they were only used on odd fire engines.

So am I understanding correct that the oil pan and water pump are attached to the timing cover? How does one take the crank pully off to remove the timing cover?

The bolt in the center of the harmonic balancer holds it on. Helps to have a impact wrench to break it loose. You do not need to remove the water pump from the cover, but you do need to remove the 5/16 bolts(the ones that take a 1/2" socket) that go through the water pump into the block. While you have it all apart, it is a good time to take a good look at both the water pump and fuel pump because it is so much easier to change them when it is all apart. While you have the front cover off, it is a good time to pull the intake manifold and inspect the lobes on the cam. These Buick motors run very low oil pressure and are very prone to cam and lifter wear. To change the cam you have to remove the timing set anyways so you are already half way through the preparatory steps to changing the cam once you get to this point.

It depends if it's been replaced.

my 69 came with the d27 front and d44 rear.

Factory equipment for 1969 is a closed-knuckle Dana 27 front, and probably a tapered (nutted two-piece) Dana 44 rear. Jeep switched to a flanged (one-piece) Dana 44 rear axle around 1970 but with no distinct year-model cut-off, so it's possible that a "1969" CJ could have come with a flanged 44.

The first year for a Dana 30 front was 1972, and the first year for an AMC 20 rear was 1976. So only if they were swapped in.

I've order my service manual. Should be here next week. Hopefully I'll get to pull the timing cover tonight or tomorrow.

OK, so I pulled all the bolts off the Timing Cover and removed the pully from the Crank. I cannot get the cover off. Is it because of the distributor?
