Early CJ5 Cowls

    I have always wondered about the cowl on my 1960, CJ5... there is a raised 'block' on the cowl in front of the driver...What is this for? I have yet to find anything on it...Also, is that an air scoop on the cowl on the passenger side? It has been sealed shut. I haven't seen any replacement parts if it was to be operational....

    That's where the battery box was on the M38A1. Rather than change the stamping dies, they just made a cover to seal it up.

    Don't know about the air scoop. Sometimes owners would put an air door in the flat side of the Jeep, below the cowl. Something similar was used on the postal Jeeps.

    If you're talking about the little bump on the drivers side that's a leftover from the military versions- it's where the mirror is mounted on those.

    On the passenger side the big cover is also a military leftover- that would be a lid to where they keep the 24 volt batteries on those. On 5's they just welded it in place.

    Thanks. I saw one of those battery boxes on someone's vintage military jeep at last weeks Military Vehicle Preservation Association get together here in town. That explained the 'no glove box'. I can now sleep at night...

    I'm guessing the military battery box carryover lid disappeared sometime in later '64?
    I had an early '64 with it, and both my '65s have no evidence of the military lid on the cowl.

    Technically speaking it wasn't a 24 volt battery. They used two 12 volts in series.
