    Hey Guys,
I am rebuilding my Dana 18.
I was wondering which direction the speedometer drive gear goes?
Does side A go towards the transfer case?

    Thanks,

I just did mine and installed mine with side A towards transfercase. only because when I held things up and set the rear cap over it, the gears would not mesh very well like only 1 tooth with side B towards the transfer case. and when I installed A towards the transfercase it seems to mesh perfectly with about all the teeth.

I agree, side A toward the case. Here is a photo of mine coming off during my recent rebuild. I take lots of pictures because I know my memory isn't as long as the rebuild will take.:)

I just kinda tested mine installed both ways in my 48 cj2a since when I tore it apart to see which way "looked" right, that speedo gear was completely missing in mine. which is kinda weird because my 2a supposedly hasn't been driven in 40 years and the rear cap bolts where still wired shut with metal wire and looked original. who knows how long it had been missing or why.

I just replaced the seals/bearings in my transmission (T-90A-1) and went through this. Fortunately my brother likes to lay things out in the direction they came out so it wasn't much of a problem.
However....I was surprised that there doesn't seem to be anything holding the gear from spinning freely? We put it back the way it came out, but there's no keeper. Is it just held by friction?

Yes, once you get the yoke nut tightened down that worm gear is firmly trapped against the bearing inner race and the yoke.
