installing a procomp 2.5 on my 74 cj. Ran into this problem

Basically the bushing is .870 and the hole in the hanger is .759. Anyone run into this problem before or have a solution? I checked a few other bushings I had around and they were all .870 so I know the bushings are not wrong. Also they pressed into the spring eyes just fine.

Are the old bushing sleeves out of the hangers? Once you get the rubber part out, you have to get the outer sleeve out that was part of the original bushing. A hacksaw ran through the hole works. Then you can drive it out after cutting it

Whats left in the hanger looks to be welded in (don't know if it's factory or not).

If it was welded in it's not original. That sleeve will have to come out.

Ole Blue may be right. Inside the welded tube, the thin outer sleeve from the old bushing could be stuck. The dimensions you give support that possibility.

Possibly it can be collapsed with a chisel and withdrawn, or careful work with a cutting torch or sawzall can slit it.

Looking at hanger brackets shows two types being threaded and un-threaded. Also shows them with spreader tube welded in so I am not sure what you have.

Hit that little ridge around the inside of the hole in the bracket with a chisel. Pretty sure the shell for the old silent block bushing is still in there. If it is, it will bend and you can work it out of there.

The actual wall of the bushing tube is about 3/16" thick. You can see its outline in the rust.

x2. Like Old Blue suggested, I used the hacksaw through the middle method on mine. Once you cut through it, use a screwdriver/chisel to fold up one side and you can then drive it out with ease.

I had the same issue on my fronts.. I had a machinist friend machine the round inner part and removed the old ones. They are only tacked a bit, so a grinder will pretty much take em off. Just so happens I may have an extra or two if you are interested..

Thank you but I think i'll go with new hangers. I think the whole hanger has seen better days! Thanks to everyone for the advice as well. I'll be sure and snap a pic when i'm done with it.

Can you weld? IIRC that bracket is held on by the rivet and bolt you see, plus beads of weld between the bracket and the frame.

This is the bracket that Omix-Ada sells http://www.oconeeoffroad.com/servlet/the-32716/18270.04-omix-dsh-ada-18270.04-BRACKET/Detail - my book says it's the right part for the rear, but maybe not the front. You can get the A544 threaded bracket for the front, and that would require you to use the U-shaped greased shackles from Jeep. http://www.jeep4x4center.com/shackle-kit-right-thread-928764.html

Yeah I can weld enough to get it tacked on the corners. Mine are still rivet in front hole and bolt through the back, figured new grade 8 bolts would be just fine especially if its retacked on the corners. Thanks for the link, i'll check them out, and actually oconee isnt too far from me!

Yep those are the same ones! They didn't come with the kit but I found 2 of them on amazon for $9 each and another set for $20 something apiece. I'm not a huge fan of the omix stuff but these seem like quality parts!

Great prices. I paid 4wheelparts.com prices for my pair (at least I got free shipping for in-store pick up). But I thought they were OEM for stock springs. Will they work with a 2.5" lift also? The reason I am asking is that I may be replacing my stock springs and wonder if I can use these shackles if I decide to go with a lift (wouldn't be more than 2.5", likely 1").

OEM is a silent block bushing. That's two steel shells (tubes) with rubber in between.

The threaded greaseable shackles are OEM for pre-CJ5 CJs and the very early CJ-5s. These used a cast C-shaped shackle.

They worked on the procomp springs just fine, just had to press out pro thane bushing and press in brass bushing. And once I drove those other pieces out of my hanger the brass bushing pressed into them easily as well.

Thanks, Tim. You're absolutely right. I guess I was referring to the dimensions of the HD shackle kit from Omix-Ada. Here's Omix-Ada's OE shackle kit for 55-75 CJ5s - http://www.omix-ada.com/shackle-kit-55-75-jeep-cj-models.html (this kit matches the parts that I took off of my stock set up). My understanding is that the HD kit has the same length from the hanger to the spring as the OE kit. For some reason, I was under the impression that the length of the shackle matters with respect to swapping out a stock spring for a lifted spring. I guess my real question is whether you can run these HD greasable shackles with a lifted spring and if so, how high of a lift can you use with them?
