I am new to the Jeep world. I have a 1964 CJ5. I think it is missing a spare tire carrier that goes across the rear. There is a tube type fitting on the outside corners that I suspect are there to hold the spare tire rack. I have not been able to locate any photos to determine if that is correct nor have I been able to find a source. Any thoughts from you guys?

This is the Whitco carrier -

There was also a Kayline carrier. Both are aftermarket products. Jeep sold the Whitco as "Jeep Approved Special Equipment" in the day, via the dealer parts counters.

There's no present-day aftermarket source for these. Used is all there is, if you can find them. A few modern companies have made a different style of carrier that bolts to the rear cross-member, but nothing that bolts to the body any more.

Google "Whitco Jeep tire carrier" and "Kayline Jeep tire carrier" for plenty of pictures.

I don't know what your tube fittings look like, but I've seen tube fittings at the rear corners that have been used as some sort of mount for a top frame and also flag carriers. Most of the Jeep's I've seen from that vintage have had the spare mounted on the right rear quarter panel, sort of above and slightly behind the rear wheel. This photo shows the tubes at the corners and the spare location of my father's 1960 CJ-5. That's me next to the spare quite a few years ago.

Yes, those tubes welded to the body are bow pockets for a soft top. They were welded on the earlier examples of the CJ-5.

The fender mounted spare, as above, is how all Jeeps with a spare tire were delivered prior the solid back panel first used on the Ren II.

As written here, the rear right side was the stock location. But at one time aftermarket swing-out rear-mount tire and accessory racks were popular. You probably could find one of those.

The side carriers look neat, but have a tendency to hang on trees! (voice of experience).

Not to mention car doors, rocks, stumps and countless other items. The side mount was no doubt the cheapest default Willys/Kaiser could come up with for a problem without any real good solution. Personally, I think they should have left it on the left side where it started. At least you get to see the contact there.

If you find a Whitco or Kayline carrier (or build your own), make sure to put some solid backing on the inside, preferably tying into the wheel well. If you don't, eventually you tear up the sheet metal.

Yep, need extra backing. At least on the side.

Is that from the tire carrier
My whitco carrier was damaging my tub and that's why I removed it then I sold the 55 and still have the carrier in my storage unit

The ones in your photo are what I am talking about.

I do not want to hang a spare on the side. Guess I will look for a cross beam to hold it or build one.

    Thanks All

That's on the rear passenger side. Where the side mount is located. PO knocked the spare tire off and left this hole.

Here's an example of "modern" design for tire carriers on these Jeeps: http://www.crossenterprises.com/cjyjtj.html - maybe this will give you some design ideas.

The tires most people run are so big now that the old style carriers that bolt to the body are just not strong enough. Back in the day, I broke my Whitco by loading it down with a heavy tire and wheel. It just disappeared at around 3AM on the Santa Monica freeway - never did find it. If you put a bracket across the back of your Jeep, make sure that the carrier has enough backing or support to carry a heavy tire.

There's been some really good designs that members have come up with posted here, try a search on "tire carrier". Here's one John Worman came up with-

    http://home.beyondbb.com/worman/tire.html

There's also been some swingouts as well, nice big beefy ones braced to the frame that won't rip out the tub body mental at the first bump.

Mine is very similar to that. Bolts into the factory drawbar holes on the frame, and the chain holes on the tailgate to keep it upright.
Lightweight, strong, and doesn't put much stress on the body. But if you use your tailgate a lot (I rarely do), the swing down design is in the way.

How big a tire do you keep on there?
