I would like to replace my windshield by a plastic one, made by myself, during the time I look for a glass window cut at the dimension.

What kind of plastic must I buy?

I would like to take off the full windshied and make a plastic one in replacement.

So I can give the windshield to the glass factory.

Is it the good solution or must I make 2 plastic parts and make a temporary repalcement of the 2 glasses.

The driver glass is becoming white so not good to see.

    Thanks to all

The windshield (or, windshields, in your case) are just flat glass.
Are there no glass shops in your country that can cut the glass to proper size?

Not really, I have to get a securit glass, so I want to bring them the part and they cut with the curve.
they have to put some rubber around for good fitting.

So I prefer to give them the job, I had some trouble cutting glass, it seems easy but...

Lexan works well for windshields. There is a scratch resistant variety, but it's not cheap. It's what we use in the racecars

Lexan, also called polycarbonate. It won't crack or shatter. Is used for motorcycle windshields, etc. But it will scratch easily.

I have asked to the cy "carglass" which is in France what is called "Safelite" in US.

I gave the car nr, model, we discussed and I bring my windshield ( not the Jeep) to them so it is repaired by an agreed cy for insurance reasons.

It seems that they can do it.

The problem is that I have to take the windshield off, only the moving part.

But the wipers are included in them so I must take the wipers off too.

I'll try to get Lexan somewhere to make a temporary windshield.

It is more complicated than to buy flat glass and adapt it, but we have many problems with car regulations, and if any problem happens, I want to be guranteed by the insurance.

As you know, insurance people like to say NO it they find something not clear.

Do you believe that in USA the cy Safelite can supply a glass window for a winshield ventilated ? like mine?

Replacing that windshield should be very easy for any reputable glass shop. There's nothing special about it, it's just laminated safety glass. It comes in large sheets and the glass shop can cut it to fit in house. Replacing your windshield shouldn't take a good shop more than a few hours.

But I have to take the windshield away and bring it to them.

There is no big glass shop near my country house, I have to go to the big city.

I wait for the answer of the car glass specialist, then I'll check with a big glass shop.

Afterwards I'll see if I need to buy lexan sheet to wait for the repair, or not.

    Thnaks to all.

Oh ok. Definitely talk to the glass shop ahead of time and explain to them that your vehicle is out of service while they replace the windshield. You might be able to schedule it so they will have it done the same day for you.

    Alan,
Be careful about using Lexan for windshield/windscreen, because of distortion. I am sure it is not legal in France. We have a glass factory here, where they can reproduce complex curved windshields, a flat safety glass windshield can not be a problem. Look for a glass company in your area or try jeep parts suppliers.

Couldn't you make a cardboard pattern?

Take the pattern to the class shop and use the old glass while you wait.

    Just a thought.

this is complex to fix a glass inside the windshield, I prefer to let the glass people deal with it.

I already tried to cut or install glass myself, with my little hands hellokitty and I had to clean the mess afterwards!

I have a panel that came out of one of those fancy wind shields. If it helps I could send it to you so they can make a pattern or I can trace it on paper and send it.

If I can help, let me know.

DO you believe that it is exactly the same size.

Of course you could make a copy on a paper and send it by mail; but I want to check the exact size before ( next week) and I cans send you what I found exactly. The glass is glued on the metal so it is not easy to check and to repair; I had problms with glass before, it breaks when you don't want.

So next week to follow. Thanks.

As to the plastic, I think it will be way more expensive than the safety glass and all of it is WAY softer than glass. Your wipers will no doubt leave a very visible pattern the first time you use them. I would go for the safety glass even if it ment the Jeep was parked for a week or two.

    Probably true.

Alan, just remove the whole windshield, take it to the glass shop, and wear sunglasses when you drive the jeep.

Why use a glass substitute and pay for it when you have to pay for glass also ? Paying twice makes no economic sense...try this website....www.kaiserwillys.com...they sell pre cut glass specifically for your vehicle...the prices are reasonable...I've used them many times with no problems...they even have the rubber that holds the glass in the frame...be sure to get their catalog...it covers everything you can think of...I hope this will help you...Mike S.
