well, thought I was on a roll , got the head off, found the problem, had the head redone and getting ready for assembly of my 1980 amc 258. read somewhere that you should wipe out any oil or whatever in the threaded holes on the block before installing the new bolts. figured a q-tip would do the job. worked fine up to the last hole, the front right hole that goes into the water passages. DROPPED the q-tip down the hole, clean out of sight. The question is can I access this water passage by removing the water pump.

I dunno, but maybe hooking a small hose to a shop and sticking it down there?? Orrr... blowing air into another hole and trying to blow it back out?

    might be worth a shot?

Yes the water jacket is right behind the water pump.

Shop vac is a good idea. Tape a piece of fuel hose to the end of the vac hose and probe around for it down in the water passage.

Probably not a big deal. Not likely to cause any issues. Not like you dropped a wingnut into the carb on a 67 Shelby and didn't tell anybody, but we'll leave that story for another time.

Yes, take the water pump off. You probably need a new one anyhow.
Besides, there will be lots of rusty, crusty mud in there that should be flushed out.
