A good buddy gave me a big green canves tarp and i have a sewing machine that will sew it so I am going to make a bikini top for my 52 M38a1 and would like to know or see what holds the top in the channel on the windshield. Thanks Doug

A round welt or strip of rope/piping (about 1/4" diameter) hemmed into the forward edge of the canvas will slide sideways into the channel at the top of the windshield.

Some later designs instead use a flat piece of spring steel that enters the channel groove vertically and is held there by rotational force from tensioning the top, similar to YJs etc.

I made a tunnel with glue (neopren) U shape and inside the tunnel I put a 4mm metal bar. It comes inside the part above the windshield and that is perfect.

For the rest same system and elastic ropes to hold all with rigidity and tension. Easy to to.

Just remember that you need space to take off or to put in your top, on left or right side.
