    You are lucky if you didn't have a cylinder fill up with fuel. Then cranking the engine could have bent a rod.

    A gravity feed tank should have a shut off valve controlled by the ignition switch.

    Search the site for carb kit advice. A big factor is the float valve - the early CJ has a smaller orifice than many kits provide, which requires less presssure to close - to reduce flooding over rough ground.

    My 67 bronco had the same problem and i didnt notice till a rod started to knock from bad lubrication. Changed the oil and its been fine since, still have to rebuild that carb too. Oldtime helped me find a NOS kit on ebay so i'm gonna get one of them and get one or two extra to put on the shelf, i'll need them someday and who knows how long NOS will be around
