Ok. I have a solenoid issue I believe. When I turn the ignition the motor does not crank and the solenoid begins to smoke. Does this mean I need a new solenoid? The wiring looks to be all good. This is a buddies jeep so therefor second hand info. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Put it in neutral, then by-pass the solenoid with a heavy jumper cable, or a screwdriver blade, etc. across the two big terminals. (Be ready for sparks!) See if the starter cranks. Make SURE it is OUT of gear!

If it turns over normally, you need a solenoid. If not, maybe a starter.

First off, what engine and starter are you talking about?

Sounds as if the drive may be jammed into the teeth...but I would have thought you might feel something when you turned the key. Pete gave you good advice as to how to start checking...

If you get a big spark when you use the screwdriver, it might be worth a look by removing the inspection cover and looking to see if the bendix teeth on the starter are engaged in the flywheel teeth instead of being withdrawn as normal
