My first Ross box

On my new 52 m38 there is a Ross box and the steering has some stuff spots. Is that common in that box or will a new used box possibly fix it or rebuild it. I know there is a conversion for it how is that to swap?

 

When I bought my 59 cj5 it sat mostly for the owners 3 years of owning it and it had tough spots too while turning. you would turn to a spot and steering would almost lock up and require much force to get past that spot. I simply filled the gear box with 90 weight oil and drove it and after about a month it kinda just went away. Also have you checked to make sure it is in fact a problem with the steering box instead of something else binding up?

 

Yeah and swapped to smaller tires to no help

 

If the king-pin bearings are rusted up, it will give you the same effect. Drop the drag link and then turn the wheel. This will isolate the trouble area.

 

Like Walt says. The king pin bearing races can get worn with vertical grooves in them.

 

Do I
1. Add gear oil and see if it smooths out
2. Find another box
3. Rebuild
4. Upgrade

 

What we are trying to say is that it may not be the box.

 

I've swapped tires and same bad spots haven't tried it in the air under no load
