A buddy of mine used to take the steering wheel off and either take it with him or lock it to the underside of the JEEP somewhere with a cable type bike lock. This was on a 3A. One nut holds the wheel on and he kept it finger tight. I was always a little nervous riding in his JEEP.

 You mean like when he asked you to take over the wheel for a while and then he handed it to you? R)

all these are great thanks. oddly when i owned my cj2a i was still in college in albuquerque unm. left the jeep in the mass parking lot out back of the dorms and accross the street. no one tried to take it. tho they did steal the jerry can when i forgot and left it inside and that's when gas was about 35 or 40 cents a gallon!!.

I remove the main coil wire, stick it in my pocket and go on my way.

Now that I have EFI I will just pull the fuel pump relay or fuse.

On the CJ5 (soft top, no locks) I use a special multi-pin plug and run the coil and starter circuits through it. Sort of like the robot's power pack from Lost in Space. On the M715 (hard top and "real" doors, but no door locks as per US military) I rigged a not too obvious switch on the starter solenoid. Also added a Tuffy console for secure storage of small items.

Insure it and leave the keys in the Jeep has worked so far. Also, you may want to leave the original paint in a poor state. Mine is so ugly that other Jeepers will hardly wave at me on the road. Hope this helps.

You could also add a quick disconnect steering wheel (available at any speed shop).
Hard to steal when they can't steer the thing

Same thing with mine :) I've had people that know how to drive stick try to figure it out (after I left it in a strange setup). It was very confusing to them. Just leave the tcase in low and the OD in neutral.
Also, when I was living at college and the Jeep stayed in the parking lot, I used a chain and padlock to lock the steering wheel to the seat bracket.

Or you can have a faulty distributor and that way it'll only start half the time.

The previous FAQ - which has not been migrated yet - had a section on security. From what I recall, the ideas there weren't that much different than what's below...

If you're up for creating some diagrams...we'd be happy to work them in...

OK - after reading these posts I've got another way.

AS a Carter YF fan I'd suggest you install a solex carburetor on your F head. Once the solex is on it is a bear to start and hardly runs at all!

Seriously, if one was super concerned he could put a solenoid valve with a hidden switch in the brake lines. Press on the brakes, turn on the valve, and it would hold the pressure on the brakes.

It might start, but it aint gonna roll anywhere.

^ Exactly what I did with an old Toyota truck (opens with pair of scissors..) if you carry around 2 different types of fuses for under the dash and hit a switch for the ignition, you can start the truck. HOWEVER, the brakes are locked.. makes it allot harder to flatbed away too, because they have to drag it along the ground. combine that with no steering wheel makes it not worthwhile, even for parts.
