Glad I found this Forum. I have a 1965 CJ5 4 cyclinder When I picked up the Jeep it would turn over the starter but after several attempts you would turn the key and nothing , So i jumped the soleniod and it would turn over , but no start, I drag her home and the fuel line was clogged I bought a new solenoid and to no avail it would not turn over so I jump it at the solenoid and it will turn over and start and run great. the solenoid had three wires one to the batt, one to coil and a small wire runs to the starter. so my question is maybe we tried to turn over the Engine too long and burned up the ignition switch or?

    Thanks....

I'm not too familiar with quite that old, but my experience would have a large wire off the solenoid to the battery, another large wire from the opposite side of the solenoid to the starter, and a small wire from the front of the solenoid to the ignition switch. If jumping the lug that the small wire connects to with the one connected to the battery turns the starter then there is a problem in the ignition switch or the wires connected to it. Also, make sure the solenoid body us grounded.

It will turn the starter but won't activate the solenoid? Sounds like low voltage to the solenoid. Check the battery, is it fresh? Also the voltage reaching the solenoid via the switch. Maybe a poor connection.
