No access to a 5 foot brake, but for $75 a local shop will bend up four sides already marked. After buying the steel and paying for the bend, it would be cheaper to buy a custom dash.

More progress to report. I was able to shoot both kinds of primer on the body parts this past weekend. The first step involved preping all the parts with a solvent based metal cleaner. I used Omni MP170 for the first primer, which is an epoxy primer designed to seal everything and provide a good base for the next layer. The epoxy primer does not need to be sanded prior to top coating, needs only one coat, and it must be covered within 3 days. The second step was to clean any dust/particles with a tack rag and prep for the high build catalyst primer. I used Mar-Hyde Ultimate 2K for this step. This was my first time using it and I noticed right away how thick it becomes. It sprayed out of the gun alright, but in 100 degree temperatures it started to dry very quickly. With two coats of this goo, it should yield a 3mil thick layer. Now she is ready to be sanded and then base coat/clear coat :p

    hi pie!

the high build primer... i assume its for filling in low areas/imperfections?

like some of the additives (Mr Primer) that are used on model airplanes?

goes on thick, has a good tooth for next layer, and is usually a pleasure to work with...

i ll be hitting you and nwedgar up for some painting tips in the future... as i have never painted anything larger than a 1:32 or a 1:24 model... the only auto painting i have experience with is rattle can... and while i can get a good finish, its just too much to ask for a whole vehicle...

i REALLY like the look of that primer... and at 3 mil is like a condom for your JEEP!

after the high-build, do you shoot a contrasting color to find low spots during sanding, or is it not needed?

    yes

that's how it is usually done. You can spray a can of black against the yellow, known as a guide coat.

I highly recommend this book if you are new to automotive painting. I have used this book extensively.

Painting is DONE!!! I was very fortunate to know someone with a professional paint booth. My original plan was to use my garage and that would have been a PITA.
The next painting project; if I ever do one again, will be all rattle cans.

I painted the Jeep Stealth Metallic Grey; paint code 928L (I used 1.25 gallons). A metallic paint choice may not have been the best idea for a rookie like myself. The metallic was not easy to lay down, but I did manage to figure it out with the help of my friends.

The clear coat went on fairly easy and gave it a good shine.

For a rookie painter and body man I am happy with the results and very anxious to see it all put together...For now here are some pics of the finished product.
Its hard to capture the color and metallic from pictures. I will post more pics once the paint cures and the tub is placed on the frame.

I was just wondering what your status was. Hadn't seen a post in awhile. Paint looks great. I just took my leftover paint back to the retailer and had them put it in a rattlecan for me. Got a couple of small repairs to do on the paint and didn't want to mess with setting up a compressor and gun to shoot a little bit of paint. Getting the paint done is a major step toward having your Jeep back on the road. I remember how excited I was to finally be finished with bodywork and paint. Especially since both were way outside my area of expertise.

Thanks, it took me a long time to decide on that color. I need to bleed the entire brake system (it's all new) and then I can put the body on.

I like the LED tool; that would have come in handy when I put them on my JK. I can't describe how much fun it was to drill 100's of 1/8" holes in the 3/16" corner armor and then cutting out the circle with a jigsaw...lol.

Thought I'd share a few pics with the newly painted parts. Hard to see the true color with a cell phone camera. I'll be changing to a black wheel and 33x10.50 KM2
Definitely helps the motivation factor when it starts to come together :)
I'm working on making a mount for the aluminum Speedway radiator. Then the next major item will be installing a new 12 circuit wiring harness.

Looks great! It's a shame that all the work you put into the undercarriage, drivetrain and body isn't more visible. It kind of irks me when you put hundreds of hours and $$$ into all the details that make it a reliable, trail-worthy machine, and then all somebody has to say is "nice wheels" or "nice paint." The next time somebody (who doesn't know about all the work you put into this) comes up and says "nice Jeep!", just say "you have no idea." LOL

Working on all the small things right now. I actually took the Jeep to work so I could finish it up when things are slow.
Starting at the back of the Jeep, I bolted down the flush LED tail lights.

Followed up by installing the fuel filler and new locking gas cap.

Cleaned up the headlight bezels, added new parking lamp lenses, and bolted down some new grill welting.

New welting for the windshield to hood brackets.

Also found a source for new windshield wiper arms and blades. I have the single speed American Bosch wiper motors.
Purchased from www.aeiokla.com They also have new Bosch wiper motors.
    Blades are part # BD721011-10
    Arms are part # LE50950

    Pile of wires...Yikes!

Looks great! But, why the rods for the block-off plate? Strength, or was there an original block-off plate that had them?

Thanks guys, getting very close to finishing her up. The rods are mostly for strength, but also for looks.
