There seem to be no shortage of posts about flat towing a CJ5, but I can't find one missing piece of the puzzle. What type of tow bar do you use?

I see lots of ads for the bolt on style, but nothing about the old style clamp on. You know, the kind that used to attach to a steel bumper, like our CJs have. I'm pretty sure nobody makes them anymore, but there must be some used ones around. I'd rather not have something permanently bolted to my front bumper, and I don't plan to tow long distances, so that seems to be a good choice. Or is it?

Suggestions or experience with either type?
    Thanks.

Mine has two plates with an eye/tab for each side that bolt to the front bumper. The tow bar then bolts on the eye/tab. I could take pics if you need them. this is what I used to tow it home, worked well.

My experience with the clamp on style is that they work loose at inopportune moments. I'd get a bolt on one and live with the extra holes in the bumper.

I use the baseplates & 10,000 lb towbar that I used to pull my Dodge Ram behind the Motorhome. Plates bolt directly to the face of the bumper. I can bolt on when I want or leave the baseplates bolted on and use the towbar's quick hookup system. A 10,000 lb towbar has a server type connection to the tow vehicle, not a trailer ball. This allows you to double pull in most states so I can pull a boat or trailer of toys behind the Jeep as it is pulled behind the Motorhome. More common setup in the West. Bought used on the internet.

Go permanent. I had both a custom setup with HD angle / bolts for attaching to the Jeep and some "towbar shackles". Each worked well. On the bar itself my unproven theory is that you'll have fewer issues towing the longer your towbar is.

I like the lift-shackle eyes that the M38A1 came with on top of the bumper. ( I used mine to mount a snow plow frame.) Seems to me they would make ideal mounts for a tow system, and could be fitted to a CJ.

That said, I presently use bolts, and drilled holes in the bumper.

For ideas about clamp-on systems, maybe a visit to a U-Haul dealer would be useful.

Im beginning to see a trend here....
Okay, would it make a difference if it's just short tows when the CJ breaks something? I've been doing some eBay & Craigslist shopping to see what's out there for towing gear, so I haven't spent any money yet.
Thanks again, you guys are great.
