A friend of mine gave me an old Jeep. The serial number is:
8305015 254434. At the top of the plate is says "Jeep". Beneath the serial number it says "Kaiser Jeep Corporation Toledo, Ohio".

Can anyone tell me what model/year Jeep this is.

My friend says it was running when he shut it off a couple years ago, but wouldn't crank when he tried it a couple months ago (it flooded). It has some rust, but I'm very happy with it for the price. He also gave me a spare rear end, front end and transmission.

He said it ran fine, but pops out of first gear, every other gear is fine. He's been using a bungy cord to hold it in first. What do you think is wrong with the transmission?

What a pal!!! I planned to have it running before dark but didn't succeed...

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Sincerely,

    NitroSteel

    Thank you!!!

I'm from Valdosta, GA (high school football capital of the world).

I'm not sure where to start on fixing the thing. My friend says it ran fine when he shut it off, other than the problem with first gear. I guess I'll try to get it running first and then tackle the cancer and transmission problem. It turns over fine, but I'm not sure it is getting spark. I drained the tank and lines and put in new fuel, but I think I'll probably have to change the points (???) and maybe the plugs. Anything else you can think of right off?

The spare transmission that came with the Jeep has three shifters on it, while the one in the Jeep only has two. I hate to sound like a dummy, but what are the three shifters for??? Unless ya'll think it's a bad idea, I'll probably just start rebuilding the 3 stick tranny and put it in when finished. I've never rebuilt a transmission before, but I want to personally tackle this one, unless ya'll advise otherwise. Where do I get parts? What all do I need?

The spare tranny is marked "T90A-1" and there is another marker on it that says "8-18-50". I assumed this was the date. If this is a 69 CJ, will this other transmission fit? It is an inline 4 cylinder engine.

Thank ya'll for the help. I know this is alot of questions.

    Sincerely,

    NitroSteel

Pops out of 2nd = typical T90 issue. Needs a rebuild.

Short sticks are for your transfer case - one for 2WD/4WD, one for high range/low range.

    Welcome from W. MI.

By transmission with three shifters, it sounds like you must mean transmission plus transfer case. It sounds like you probably have a V6 with a t-14 transmission coupled to a single stick Dana 18 transfer case. While the spare is probably a T-90 mated to a Dana 18 twin-stick transfer case. Some pics of the transmission/transfercase could help us identify your set-up better.

Oh yeah. Welcome from San Diego!

The t 90 transmission is pretty sinple to rebuild. I just did mine a couple weeks ago and it is really no big deal if you want to use the t90. As for the trans with 3 sticks, I have the same one in my 76. the 2 shifters on the side are both for transfer case. Good luck with the new jeep

yes I would suspect a 69-68 model. However the windshield is tilted back at an angle and I thought that was for the later years early 70's. mmmm might just be the picture.
nice jeep, fun project. I have had my jeep for 4 years and it ran till the day I took it all apart. Now i have jeep guts all over my place. :)

I disagree on the year...the number is more than 100K earlier than mine and Mine's a '69. Figuring 30K per year, I'd say around a '66 or early '67.

Congratulations on your freebie, and welcome from Mississippi.

Oh yeah another difference from mine is the 015 digit...mine's 017. But that may have something to do with the engine spec or the emissions options....not for sure.

Nitro, the first thing you should do is purchase a shop manual for your jeep. Faxon among others has some factory reprints.

    Welcome, from Plymouth, Ma.

I have to agree, the T90 is not too difficult. Parts are abundant. Lots of online places, and you'll probably have a couple 4x4 places near you that'll have some of the parts. Prolly the synchros are bad if it pops out of gear.
    Check http://www.willystech.com/wt/T90RebuildGuide/T90rebuild.htm
    and
    http://www.willystech.com/wt/Model18TCase/Model18TransferCase.html
for info on how to do the tranny and transfer case properly. This is the stuff the manual doesn't show you.

But, first thing I'd do is get it running to figger out what else you need to do. Once you know how far you'll have to dig in, then you can decide on how best to do it. :p Keep cool, and resist the temptation to pull it all apart until you are sure you want to tackle that. Many a Jeep has been sold off as a bunch of parts because the guy didn't know what he was setting himself up for.

    And Welcome from Phoenix!

    Greetings from Boston!

Re getting it started, I think you're on the right track. You drained and replaced the old gas. Draining and replacing the motor oil would be good too. You could put a teaspoon of oil in each cylinder, through the spark plug hole, and turn it over by hand a few times. You'll need a good, strong battery. You shouldn't need to change the plugs, points or condensor if it ran and you don't identify another problem.

Basically you need fuel and spark - before you try to start it in ernest, take the coil wire out of the distributor cap and crank it over a few times with the starter and see if there's spark coming from the coil wire to ground. Use a stick or something else that's well insulated to hold the coil wire. This'll let you check spark and help to pre-oil the engine. If you have spark, put the coil wire back, pour a little gas down the carburetor, and it should start. It takes a few seconds of running for the fuel pump to pump gas from the tank to the carb, so if it dies try it again. After a few tries, it should run on its own. hth
