Hello fellas, Im thinking of welding my differential in my narrow track amc 20 equipped 46 cj2a. For now, I tow this jeep with a tow dolly at hwy speeds and have no problems so far. I realize the potential problems with a poorly welded diff. but do any of you have a welded diff and tow your rig at hwy speeds. What has been your experience? Have you had your rear end grenade on you? There are a kabillion threads on various threads that cover welded vs any locker/ limited slip combo but I havent seen any thing address the towing issue. what say you?

Never have done that, but suspect you are going to get a lot of rear tire wear in addition to more tow resistance in the turns. If you are using a dolly, can't you just back it on and tie down the steering wheel? Problem avoided, especially if you have hubs on the D30.

Now, about welding a 20 with a 350 in front of it----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You might get away with it on a dry road, but with a wet road you'll more than likely lose it on the first curve cause it will probably slide instead of tracking.

Thought about backing it on. I may just end up doing that. He,He.... I knew I would get comment on putting a welded 20 behind the 350 :D. I plan to eventually go with one piece axles and a locker of some sort. For now, Ill wheel it till I break it.

Don't bother spending money on 1 piece axles for a 20. Weld it up and wheel it! When it breaks, throw away and get a Dana 44.

DJ5 had a centered 44 from 69 to 83. Very easy to find, most are 3.73. Some are narrower then 51", just pull a tape on them.
