Hi, Looking for advice on best way to repair or prep rust under the winshield seal. The frame itself is in great shape, however the steel lip (the vertical tang that the seal saddles) is quite pitted and scaled from years of moisture exposure. There appears to be no complete rust through.

I'm thinking that I'll wire brush, POR-15, and paint. Then once I'm ready for glass install I'll use liberal amounts of silicone type sealant between the steel /rubber seal surface.

    Thoughts?

POR15 should do it. Don't know that I'd go with silicone sealant, silicone lube maybe. Some say silicone sealant absorbs and retains water. Can't say I've ever run into that problem myself.

I guess that my concern is part structural and part water tight. There appears to be lots a lip left to hold the seal in place, but the rust has created 1/16" to 1/8" valleys along what should be a straight edge. I'm thinking the actual seal for water tightness should be the "rusted" knife egde that the seal straddles.

I'm a new menber so I don;t think I can post pix yet. Thanks for your help.

Not perfect but not bad if it all looks like that.

I had some of that on my Tux and I wanted a straight edge seal so the wind would not blow rain under the seal. After rust removal, I straight edged some JB Weld on the outside to fill all the dips/dimples. After drying of the weld I then block sanded for smooth straight surface and painted with primer. Looks as good as new so no worries.

Walt, thanks for the tip. I'll post an update once I dig into it. Pack Rat, thanks for the encouragement.

I have my work cut out for me, my jeepster is mechanically in good shape. Its a southern car, so all in all its pretty clean, its got the window rust, couple holes in the rocker, some kinks in the rear to straighten, and a few stress cracks in the front quarter panels where they mount to the cowl. I'll be tackling this a few hours here and there, and hope to be drivnig next year.
