Okay, I'm almost ready to crank up my rebuilt 304 (i think), but I've never done this before and I never claimed to be much of a mechanic. This is a frame off resto and I have the chassis pretty much done, engine/tranny in, and I've been putting all the crap back on the 304. Now I'm lost, afraid I'll screw something up, and need some help.

Anyone know somebody in my area that would be willing to work with me to get this up and running? I'm a bit out of my comfort zone now.

Can't help you with a local mechanic, but I can offer some other advice. My machine shop gave me specific instructions to follow in order to ensure a good engine start and hardening the camshaft, you should check with your engine builder for what they recommend.

    1. Fill with Shell Rotella T 15w-40 (has higher ZDDP additive)
    2. When First cranking engine, run between 1200 - 1500 RPM for approximately 6-8 minutes
    3. Turn off engine and let cool for 30 mins
    4. Recrank engine and again run at 1200 - 1500 RPM for approximately 6-8 minutes
    5. Turn off and let the engine completely cool
    6. Recrank and set timing and idle speed.

I found an additive at a local Pep Boys auto parts store that is specifically for engine break-in, it is essentially a zinc additive, sorry but I forgot the brand.

I recently went through a rebuilt engine startup and had a few issues, this is the thread that has some good information to keep in mind.

Check post #4 for a good explanation of how to ensure you are at Top Dead Center when putting in the distributor.

I also found the following link informative...look at post #3.

If you are out of your comfort zone it is a good idea to search out someone in the area that knows what they're doing. It could save you some headaches and possibly $$$. Good luck in your search.

    Thanks for the info!

Also, tried to reply to PM from 58 Willys and it doesn't seem to let me. I'm not ignoring you and interested in that contact.
