I run across them now and then. In fact, it's what's on my Dauntless now. But even if you end up with one off the Big Block cars, they're only 610cfm if memory serves, which, while on the high side, isn't wildly out of line for a 304, I'm at the office right now, but I've got a reference of the Ford Part numbers and their various Venturi sizes and CFM ratings somewhere in the shop, I'll see if I can't dig it up, I know it's not too hard to find the same info on the google, since that's where I found it in the first place.

I've been running them for years, on a number of F150/F250/Bronco applications, and while none of them were wild off-road rigs, they've always performed really well for a mild-to-medium duty off-road rig for me.

Here's a pretty good list of the casting/part numbers. I actually didn't realize they'd used the smaller carb on some big block applications.

Alright, its taken some time but i finally swapped carbs, sorry its been awhile. I went to my dads quadrajet. Its been cold and i dont have a top so i havent taken it out wheeling yet but up and down the street it seems pretty good. Only problem i can tell is now i have popping in my pipes on decel. Never had it before, i have flowmasters which are baffled so i should have plenty of back pressure. Popping is due to a lean environment correct? its fine at idle/cruise so im thinking i want to lean out my WOT, so i would reduce jet size and rods to maintain idle/cruise but lean out WOT correct? or am i way off base? would lowering the float help a bit here?

I currently have .071" jets and .050/.036" rods.

OR am i making a mountain out of a mole hill? if its not a big issue maybe i should just leave it be?

Backfiring on decel means you're too rich.

A little cackle when you let off the gas isn’t a bad thing, and sounds pretty cool to me, but it shouldn’t load up and give a loud bang.

thats what it is is a cackle, its not backfiring just popping.

thats also what i have been finding out is people actually like it. not sure if i do maybe ill get used to it.

just curious if anyone else is running a q-jet and if they could share the jet and rod set ups you are running?

Yea, mine does the same thing.
I’ve got Flow Masters but it did it when I had glass packs. I think its just the nature of a V-8 with dual exhuast, been in plenty of other vehicles that would do the same thing.

Now that I have had a chance to wheel it I must say a thank you to timgr as it works much better setup this way.
It won’t sit on a hill and idle indefinitely but if I’m climbing a hill and have to push the clutch in the engine doesn’t immediately die and will idle long enough to adjust my line and give it another try.
I’m somewhat tempted to drop the float level even more but it’s working well enough now I’m not in a hurry to “fix” it, got plenty of other issues to tackle anyway.
