Well I finally got the old steering wheel off by useing the bottle jack method I have seen and told about here. Problem is, i lost my instructions on the grant steering wheel install and dont think that I did it right or that I was sent the wrong kit. The steering wheel does not fit over the steering shaft and the bolts provided do not fit through the steering wheel. Anyone have or know where to find the instructions online or can tell me what to do? Thanks.

The only time I mounted a Grant wheel was on a boat steering system. I had to use one of their wheel adapters to fit my application and then the wheel bolted to the adapter. Unless they changed the design in the years since (30+), the wheel had to use an adapter. I'm assuming you don't have the kit when I gave this explanation. If you do have one then this advice is not going to be of any use.

After re- reading your posting, it looks like you might have the kit, just the incorrect one. In that case you can disregard my previous answer.

haha well thanks alot for the input none the less. I do have the kit and it seems like its the right one its just that the wheel wouldn't fit over the column threads nor would the bolts fit through the wheel. So what i did was place the adapter on the column, open up the steering wheel hole to fit over the shaft, then found me 3 bolts and bolted the wheel and adapter together then put the large wheel nut on after that.

I put a new steering wheel on a year or so ago, but if I remember correctly. The adapter slides down on the splines on the shaft, the you put back on the main nut and secure it down. the the steering wheel is bolted to the adapter will the small bolts. Then just pop on the center cap. They make different adapter kits for different jeeps. if it does not easily fit over the shaft, you may have got the wrong one.

My wheel didn't fit over the steering shaft so I used a dremel and opened it up which only took a slight smidge. I bolted my adapter to the steering wheel and then slide the hole unit onto the shaft and then put the main nut on. Is there a problem with doing it that way?

I had to rasp out my steering wheel a little also...the adapter fit fine...had to tap it on gently then put the nut on...finally the steering wheel. Been that way for the last 10 years...no issues

Right on! My adapter slid on perfect and was an exact match to the inside of the stock wheel. I was just worried that I may have installed it wrong but sounds like its a-ok. Thanks.

That's the right way. Did your kit not come with the horn plate, or is the '72 horn not in the steering wheel?

My kit came with the following:

    steering wheel
    adapter
    3 bolts
    2 roll pins (?)
    horn plate
    cover plate.

My jeeps horn, before, would go off if you pressed the entire steering wheel inwards.
