7.50 tires

I want to mount a 7.50x16 tires on my flatty. I planned on using the factory 16x4.5" wide rims, but the guy at the tire shop said I should have atleast a 5" wide wheel. I know the Army used the 7.50 tire on their desert Jeeps and I think they were still using the 16x4.5" rim. I don't think that half an inch will really make that big of a difference but I could be wrong. Thanks for the help.

 

M38-A1 used a 5.00 x 16" Kelsey Hayes wheel.
It is the same as the HD wheel that first became available on CJ-3B.
When 6.00 or 6.50 x 16" tires were installed the 4.50 x 16" HD KH wheel was used.
When 7.00 x 16" tires were installed the 5.00 x 16" HD KH wheel was used.
When 7.50 x 16" tires were installed on late vintage Willys PU's the 6.00 x 16" HD KH wheel was used.

I also prefer to have my wheels a tad on the narrow side because the bulged sidewall protects the wheel lip.

But I would use 5" wide rims for 7.50 x 16" tires.

I believe Harry Sheets in Indiana has the 5" wide and possibly still has a set of 6" wide KH wheels.

 

You can use the narrower wheels. It acts like a bead lock. Thats why I have a tire machine and mount wheels myself.

 

im running 235 85 16 on a 5 inch rim no issues as of yet

 

Maybe a new tire shop?

Discount asked if I wanted 30x9.5x15 mounted on my Samurai wheels. I don't remember the width on those, but I do know they are much narrower than the rims that I have 30x9.5's mounted on. Those tires need replacing, because the cacti around here will hole the side walls if you don't watch where you are going. I didn't.

 

I tried the same size combo at the tire shop but it would not mount, you need a 5.5 wide wheel or wider.

 

Just to correct one thing M38 and m38a1 used 16x4.5 the turcks used 16x5. I am going to be running 215 85 r16 cooper st's on my jeep this year.

 

I used 7:50 x 16 mounted on thin rims used for a temp spare tire when off roading in my TJ. Worked great, never came off the rim at low pressure and never hit a rim on a rock. Not sure what size the rim was but it was thin! Have a set mounted on my CJ5 but using Jeep truck rims that I think are 5 inch wide. Used the stock 4.5 rims for my military trailer with 7:50 x16 and the worked fine. I would mount one and see what you think before you buy another set.
