junkyard trip

    I'm making a trip to a junkyard tomorrow and was wondering if anyone has input to a couple of questions before I load up the back of my truck with stuff.
    1. My fenders and radiator mount (thing behind the grill) have rust holes. There is a postal Jeep there. Would the fenders or radiator mount fit my 1967 CJ5?
    2. There is a later model CJ5 there with the steering box mounted in front of the grill. Would this be worth converting my '67 to and would it be a easy switch?
    3. Dos anyone have any requests for anything? I would be glad to look for whatever and ship it to someone for my cost plus shipping.
    4. They also have an old Willys truck if anyone needs anything from that.

    Max, you can get the front steering box. for the swap. And you cn get the front crossmember also and use that for the swap. That is how the saginaw steering was done on my jeep, just copied the setup exactly how the later ones was done.

    The fenders should fit the grill but the radiator mount will probably be different, but nothing you cant probably work around.

    The only postal Jeep I've ever seen had a one pice body so I do'nt know about that one.
    On the steering though, it's not quite as easy as bolting the box in place but if you have the time and confidence, it's a good swap. I've never been keen on used steering boxes though. I've had some bad luck with em. If you decide to go with it, get the whole steering system from the column forward. You'll need some of those parts as you go along.

    postal jeep = right hand drive right? wouldnt the mount be on the wrong side of the box? i got the column and the steering shaft out of one but the box would not work unless i mounted it on the outside of the frame.

    Mb, the steering is from a later CJ5. The fenders would be from the postal Jeep.

    Re the postal Jeep, the fenders should be ok. They will probably have different holes for accessories on the inner fender, and they'll have clearance lights (aka running lights), unlike your 67. The clearance lights fit into a recess on the fender edge, which will look funny fi you don't use the lights.

    Isn't the grill and core support (radiator mount) all one unit on your 67? Most likely the postal unit will be completely different. Some of the earliest postal Jeeps came with a Chevy 4 cylinder engine, and their core support might be ok. In that case you'd need to measure to make sure. Anything later, with an inline 6, won't work. If you look at the grill and core support, it will be obvious.

    From what I've read here, adapting the later steering box bracket is more trouble than it's worth. There are lots of threads about steering box brackets if you make a search.

    If the Jeep is a '72-75 with the cast bracket and power steering (4 bolts), the bracket is worth having because they aren't made anymore, they break, and they're neat for converting these Jeeps to power steering.

    It was a sad day. Both of the Jeeps that I knew were at the junk yard, have been squished. There was a third one in the "not for sale" lot but the guys there said it was sold. Anyway thanks to everyone for the info.
