Getting ready to rebuild my steering gear box and I need a new Ross box sector shaft for my '69 w/ the 225. I have checked all the usual sources - Krage, Walck, Kaiser-Willys etc. - have not been able to find one. Lots out there for everything but the V6.

    Anyone have a good source?

Not that I've ever heard of Russ, sorry. If my experience is any indication, the offshore parts that are available for the 4-cylinder ross boxes have the metallurgical properties of an overcooked noodle. You'd be better off looking for a good, used box rather than the cheap crap parts that are out there.

IIRC the M38-A1 had an oversized box similar to the V-6 equipped CJ5s.

Thanks Steve. The M38A1 has a 15/16th shaft with a 1.5 inch pin separation. I think the diameter is the same as the V6 box but not sure about the pin separation. I may have to buy one and see or try unswaging and rotating the pins.

I remember some of the guys here have talked about and have rotated the pins. Never done it myself but don't see why not.

The V6 sector shafts are no longer obtainable as new. I rotated my pins and it worked great. Not an easy job to do for me because mine were very stubborn. I had to drill the swedge off the back of the pins, press them out and back in. Then I welded the back of them. I seem to remember that turning them 180* didn't work because the flat side would get back into the worm gear when turning. Might have to use trial & error to find the right spot.

Another method oldtime on here told me to try was to heat the back of the pin (the swedge area) to just red, then turn them with some vise grips. then reswedge them with a Ballpeen hammer. I tried this first, but mine wouldn't budge. PM oldtime for more info if needed. HTH

Thanks much. I saw that in a thread that was a couple of years old. That is what I'm thinking about trying - rotate the pins about 90 degrees.

I really wanted to have a complete sector shaft ready to install when I pulled the box - to reduce down time. Maybe I'll get an old one and work on it first.

Seems like it might have been closer to 90* now that you mention it.

If I recall correctly, oldtime said he had 1 or 2 used that he would part with. Give him a try or post a WTB add in the classifieds here. Good luck bud.
