Rust proofing?

    Hey all,

Being from a northern state (read: liberal application of salt on all road surfaces), rustproofing is a key item for me. For my restoration it looks like I'll be stripping her right down to the frame as well as purchasing a new tub, so I've got plenty of opportunity to sandblast everything and repaint it. I'm just curious as to what rustproofing methods are out there that you guys like. What products are good or not? I'm going to be doing everything I can, frame, at very least the bottom of the tub, etc etc etc. Any ideas?

Look into POR-15, do search on that subject and you'll find all kinds of info. I've used it and its holding up so far.

POR15 has my vote. When you read on the label "wear gloves, as nothing will take the paint off if it comes in contact with the skin", be sure to do it. I got some on my hands and I tired all sorts of thinners, fuels, and nail polish remover. the only thing that took it off was about 5 days and 10 minutes per day of scrubbing my hands in the shower with a brush.

Rust encapsulator..From the eastwood company. Search it on the net...Tests say it is better than POR 15. I didnt get to get it yet but i want to try it.

Thanks for the replies, guys! I'll check into both products. Once I'm done my baby should be spending the winters indoors, but I still want to be sure - especially with all the grief I've gone through with my Explorer!

These work just fine provided that-

    A) You install a sacraficial zinc electrode &

    B) You permanently immerse your jeep in salt water :).

You say these are a dealer option?!? Do they have a package deal on these things along with a 200mpg carb & that miracle teflon stuff that lets you run gravel instead of oil in your engine? I'd be taking my buisiness somewhere's else :(.

actually eastwood has something that plugs into your battery or wall and it keeps rust from forming( something about the current keeps oxidation from happening). it does not surprise me that an OE desided to install them right from the factory.

Would that run the battery down if you don't drive it everyday?

i dont know about the GM thing but the eastwood one has an adapter that can be hooked into a wall socket. saw it on "my classic car" a while back.

I was lookin on Eastwood's site and couldn't find anything on the electrical stuff. I gotta say it sounds like a bunch of hokus to me... but I've been wrong before.

I did find some useful info on that rust encapsulator stuff. Sounds very promising... I will definitely be looking into it more!
