Under Seat Tank

Need to replace the under seat tank, building a 70 with V-6. Is the metal replacement tanks with the 5 or 6 screw holes the same size and capacity as the locking ring gas tank that came out.

The V6 tanks (metal) have the big fill hole and the 6 screw sender (12 volt) and the volumn should be 10-10.5.

 

Mmm. Yes, a '70 will have the later tank with a lock ring for the sender and feed/return in the sender. Unobtainium today, AFAIK. They are the same volume as the earlier tank though.

Pretty sure the filler neck is the same for both.

I looked long and hard and never came up with the locking ring tank. I purchased matching tank and sending unit which were omix and they worked out fine.

 

I am going to buy a tank with 5 or 6 screw holes for the sending unit. A good friend of mine owns a sheet metal shop and he is going to cut the lock ring and some metal out of the original tank and weld it into the new tank. He said that would be easier than patch holes in the bottom of the original tank. I just want to make sure the tanks are the same. After this is done I need to decide if I should POR-15 the new tank

well the first tank lasted about 40 years. I would paint it the color you want and keep the JEEP in the garage.

 

Nothing wrong with the stock medal tank it is far less prone to rust and damage then a rear mounted tank. Look around, people get rid of these all the time in favor of a larger tank. If you are going to build one or just want to update the one you have now adding a sealed gas cap and a vent hole going to a canister will prevent it spilling gas when you tilt the jeep off road.

 

I looked at meltdown's tank the other day. He just por'd it and it looked good. He said it was'nt very difficult either.

 

i think both types are the same size and corect me if im wrong but dont the 6 cyl models have a fuel return line and the 4 cyls dont. the hardest part is finding a used tank that isnt full of sludge and rust. my '69 v6 has the lock ring for the sender but has a 3/4-1" layer of sludge inside that i havent found a solvent that will hurt it. the couple shops that still do hot tank dips in my area want over $80 for a tank. it would be cheaper to get a new tank and sender that match.
