anyone have a starter seize up?

my 73 isnt spinning over
the selinoid clicks and there is power coming out of it
but it doesnt spin
the motor i can spin by hand inbetween compression cycles but the starter isnt doing anything
i tryed putting power to the starter itself and it didnt even budge
i do drive it daily and the cold morning it starts a little hard and they do salt the main road here
im just scratching my head trying to figure this on out
any help would be much appreciated

Battery good ? If so. pull starter and have it tested. Most all F.L.A.P.S. can test them. Good luck.

 

i was jump starting it not sure if the battery is any good
but put the jumper wire to the starter and nothing happend
im going to pull the starter tomorrow

 

Starters wear out, even the "non-moving" parts like the field windings. The windings strain in their mounts any time you run the starter, and this strain will build up and eventually the wires will break from fatigue.

On the Ford type starters, the field has to be strong enough to slam the hinged slug into the field. The hinge moves the starter gear into the flywheel and makes a contact to start the motor turning. If the hinge does not move, the starter won't spin.

 

I have a very intermittent problem with the Jalopy where I turn the key and nothing happens. I jump the two leads with a screwdriver and bingo, she fires up and is fine for the rest of the day. Your problem seems a little different though.

For Nate: The Delco solenoid was funky on design. They are very voltage/amperage sensitive meaning they need a good sized wire from the ignition start down to the solenoid. When you jump across the solenoid your bypassing the switch wire. If you run another wire from your switch (leaving the old one connected) to the solenoid, you will decrease the voltage drop and this will help the solenoid greatly.

 

I've been having a similar problem in my 74 CJ5 for some time now, but recently the entire car dies if I push in the cig lighter. Nothing happens when you the key (no lights, nothing) and jumping the solenoid seemed to get it started again. Wierd thing is that none of the fuses behind the dash blow when this happens. Checked the grounds and such and also tested the solenoid itself and all seem fine, but no luck. Any thoughts? Thanks.

 

I had the same problem 2 months ago. I replaced the solenoid, starter, and optima battery.


It ended up being a bad connection at the battery. D'oh. Snug those up before you proceed.
