Alright, so I am working on my 66 CJ5. It has an L Head and I have been thinking about getting the Dauntless if I could find one. I have found someone that needs to get rid of his 71 frame with tranny, transfer, axles and dauntless for $350. Not sure the condition, but told it is in good shape. Kept inside, I'm going to look on Sunday. I feel like this is a great price, wanted your thougths. Also, any tips on what to look for. Like what type of axles and tranny and tcase this should have that will work with the v6? Thanks for your help guys.

$350 for a rolling chassis and drive train is a great price.

A '71 is a pretty desirable chassis. It will have a rear tank (get the tank and skid plate if you can) and a flanged Dana 44 rear axle - very desirable. An offset flanged 44 is worth the asking price.

A very few of these Jeeps came with the close-ratio T-18 4-speed transmission, but almost certainly this one will have a T-14 3-speed. They all came with a Dana 27 front axle and a Dana 44 rear axle, 10" drum brakes. 3.73 axle ratio std, 4.88 optional. 4.88s are more desirable, but I would not quibble for this price. The Trac-Lock rear LSD was a populsr option - look for the "Use limited slip oil" tag on the rear axle.

Regardless of what combination of options it has, that's a great deal.

    Thanks Tim,

I will make sure and check that. Could there be any other possible combo's that could be mated to the engine? I dont want to get something that might be bolted up thats not right.

It could have had a swap done at a time in it's life. Tims spot on if its original. Even if you find a T90 or T86 behind it, at that price it's a good deal.

Thanks guys, I will get some pics of it. Now I just have to figure out how to tell the wife that there will be two jeeps in the garage.;) Or at least until I get rid of the other.

I gave up on that attempt years ago! I just tell her I want it, then we 'negotiate', then I whine quite a bit, and then finally, I have the vehicle. Works, now have a rust free grand wagoneer, the original wrangler of mine, and the Ren. II CJ5. Along with the three Porsche 924 Turbos I keep finding down here in the southwest. But, we have a 30x60 machine shed with a BenPak lift back in Wisconsin, an attached lean-to, and a separate barn to hide stuff!

  8. I'd try to make sure the motor is free and not locked up

I will make sure and go over the motor to make sure it turns over. Any tips for checking engine, tranny and tc? Should I look out for anything besides the obvious?

Maybe pull the tranny cover if possible and look for water? It will look and smell nasty, sort of like a petrochemical-chocolate-milkshake look and smell if it has been sitting outside without a cover on it. If it does have water in it you will want to consider possibly rebuilding it.

FWIW, I won't install any tranny, transfer case, or axle without rebuilding it first unless know the EXACT history of the component. BTDT

Alright guys, here are some pics as promised. I just got this back home. I got a 71 frame with the 225, t14, offset 44 rear dana 27 front. I also got a hood and a dana 30 for $300.

I was also able to grab the rear mount gas tank. The Dana 27 has the Dualmatic hubs on them and they turn freely. I think those are good, not sure though. I feel like i got a great deal on these parts. I plan on taking the tub of my 66 and putting on this frame and driveline.

Make sure to check that there is no water in that transmission, it can go right around the shifter.

wow havent seen a hurricane wheel in a long time didnt get all 4 did you?

The wheels are going back. I just used them to get the Jeep loaded and unloaded. He did have all 4 and would probably get rid of them.

Well, I checked to see if the engine was seized and it is not. I also pulled a valve cover to see if there would be sludge or something worse. I'm no mechanic, but it looks good. it had rubber gaskets on it too. I was told that it had been gone through at some point in it's history, but who knows what that means. Here are some more pics. I am going to drain all the fluid tomorrow and check on the trans and tc.

So I got a look in the tranny, no water. Everything looks fine. Where on the transfer case is the identification? I see some numbers on the backside but cant make them out.
