CJ5 & M38A1 Gas Tank????

    Does any one have Pictures of the difference between the CJ5 and the M38A1 gas tank filler tube. Are they the same size or is one larger than the other???

    don't have comparison pics, but openings on the tanks are different sizes between the two

    The military tank fill is much larger diameter. Big enough to put your fist into.

    I wasn't sure but my opening seems pretty large, I'll post a pix..., but a regular gas cap fits.

    The military tank opening is about 6" across. Really big. If a regular gas cap fits, then it's a civvy tank.

    a1 tank has a sump as well, and the floor has a sump in it also. a cj tank is pretty much flat on the bottom with no sump

    The military tank opening is about 4 1/2". Big enough to put your hand in as noted above. (Handy sometimes!) The body of the jeep has a cutout where the filler surround bolts in, and unless some of the real early CJ-5's had bolt in ones, they are welded in. The M38A1 tank is significantly larger in volume. The floor is modified and has a "well" that extends to below the bottom of the body for the tank to fit. And my repop tank cost $300 versus the $99 jobs you can get for the CJ FWIW.

    Thanks for the info I finally found some pictures of the two tanks, and my is not a mil tank.
