firing problem on a dauntless !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    yep everythingis in the right place and everything has power the coil has pwr at all times the cap is new and isnt broken the rotor is new and isnt broken the wires are in the right place on the coil the pos comes from the ign the neg goes to the distributor. the points are opening and closing all the way . i even swaped to the old cap and still no luck

    I had the same problem...And it was the condensor that was messed up. The wire on it looked to be ok but when I pulled it out the wire just fell off. New condensor nice and tight to the dist and it fired right up. Good luck.

    got a new a condenser also . any ideas of hei will one off a 76 buick skyhawk with a 231 in it work?? im tired of point by now

    If you want an HEI you wil have to make sure it comes from on Oddfire, that would be 1975-1976 apollo or similar car with a 231 v6.

    in the parts house will it say odd fire cause im looking on the internet and it dont say

    and the apllo is only offered up to 74 and dont have a 231 its got a 250

    i found one for a odd fire for a 231 77 buick regal custom with 231 the distributor has 3 wires coming off it withs one i hook up?

    With the points in the closed position, you should read 12V +/- on the + terminal of the coil and "0" zero or near zero on the negative side of the coil. Try to do this quickly so as not to burn the points.

    I really think that adding a HEI conversion to the mix at this point in time is just asking for more trouble. The best time to switch to a HEI is when the Jeep is running well. I know that you have replaced all the parts (condenser, coil, cap, rotor, etc. etc. etc.) but I have found like many others here that just because a part is new doesn't necessarily mean that it's good. I have found that a new part is more likely to be bad than one that was recently working. You said it was running one minute and just died the next. I can't believe that in that minute you blew out your cap, coil, condenser, points, rotor, plugs, plug wires, resistor etc. I would put all your original parts back in, and then test them one at a time. Once you have verified a part is good/no good, then swap in the replacement parts one at a time using a process of elimination rather than a bulk swap of everything all at once. Also, I never saw if you have replaced your wire from the coil to the cap. Lastly, do you have a meter that will measure ohm's? Let's get this bad boy running today!

    yes sir i got a fluke and it does ohms i haven changed the wires i thought i would ohm them out . to be honest i just want the dang thing to run too cause im tired of spending money and the thing aint firing

    Where are you located?
    Maybe someone is close enough to help. This is going to be very simple, points just aren't that picky, at least not when it comes to trying to run or firing the motor.

    The positive side of this situation is that you can return all the parts you bought that weren't necessary.

    im in SC the jeep was running it was idiling good and about 1/2 way throttle it started to spudder . then it just cut off and now nothing nothing at all

    Let's go back to square one. Troubleshoot this from the beginning. As if nothing has been done yet, taking nothing for granted. Do you still have all the new parts in or have you swapped back the old stuff yet?

    yep everything is new except the distributor and wires

    I'm thinking the everything is new might not be the best approach. You may have inadvertently swapped in a bad part and actually moved your problem from one component to another. Are you game to put all your old stuff back in and start from scratch and get this running?

    well i gased the plugs out so i got new ones and put them in the rotor is the same one that was in it runnin i bought it the two days ago the cap i swaped for the old one and no change the points i put the old ones and got the points firing so i tried swapping some stuff and i bought a new coil the old one was burnt and i bought a new ballest

    Are you sure there is no fire at the plug, was the plug grounded good when you checked it, and dark to look for the arc when it fired? That arc is easy to miss when firing. Is it getting fuel?

    Do you think it jumped time on you? My 68 with a 225 was running fine one moment, then backfired and would not run again. When I got the timing chain cover off I found the cam gear had ten teeth missing and the chain was so loose I could almost take it off without taking the gears or tensioner off. New timing set got the jeep back on the road.

    If you're 100% sure there is spark at the dist. but not at the plugs, it's got to be the wire between the coil and the dist. Even if it tests out ok, I would replace it. You can always return parts that don't fix the problem.
