1970 Carb

    I picked up a 1970 jeepster with 59000 on it. Has a V-6 and the carb dies out when you throttle down the choke. It looks like it was rebuilt but not properly. Does anyone have a picture of what the carb should look like, or does anyone know what carbs can be put in its place. There are no numbers on the carb so I am really not sure what it is other than a 2 jet GM ROCHESTER CARB.

    Here's a nice exploded view--Rochester 2GC. I've heard of other guys adapting Motorcraft but the Rochester is by far the best choice, they're cheap to rebuild or buy rebuilt. Sounds like you maybe have a vacuum leak or there's a problem with the idle circuit. I'd eliminate any vacuum leaks before condemning the carb. Base gaskets and lines are the most common problems.

    Gaskets all look good only vacuum line to carb is from PVC and that's it. Now for my technical description the vacuum bulb on the passenger side does not exist on my could that be my problem?

    Although the gasket might look good, they can still leak. Carb cleaner sprayed around the base of the carb will rule that out.
    If by bulb you mean #22 in the picture, not used on Jeepsters if it's the original carb. That picture is kind of a generic one, mainly because there's too much junk piled on the hood of my Jeepster to take a picture :).

    Ok sprayed carb cleaner all around carb did not die so now what?? I am at a loss!

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

    try adjusting the two idle mixtures screws
    run them in softly, then back them out about 2 - 2.5 turns each
    report back

    Here's mine during the install about a yr. ago. Still trouble free and good at off camber and inclines. This carb has a 3 1/16" neck so it maybe different.

    The spraying of the carb cleaner will cause a rise in RPM when it finds a leak.

    disagree. That causes a stumble. Starter fluid causes the RPM to rise. At least when I've done this that's the case.

    Your right Sparky, I just had a brain fart. Was thinking Kemtool and said carb cleaner.

    I'm having maybe something similar. I parked the jeep for the winter didn't add anything to the gas. Had issues getting it running this spring. Thought water in the gas. added dry gas and it had no effect.

    From cold hit the gas, choke kicks in, start it, runs fine. Soon as it idles down starts to run rough then quits. Start it up and it quits.
    Start it and rev the engine and it runs fine no skipping or pops.
    So I know the idle circuit is the issue. So my guess is varnish or crap in the I.C. / jets.
    If you sprayed around the carb and no change try getting to the jets and clean them out as well as the airways.
    I have to try doing this myself (I hate turning mixture screws on something that ran fine last summer not sure if setting change with age).

    Count the turns as you screw them in to lightly touch the bottom. After you clear the debris then put them back where they were and it should be right.
