Short pieces of pipe welded to the top corners of the tub? Yep, leftover from military canvas top.

\So was this common practice for civilian jeeps or strictly
    miitary.
And was it some sort of crossover like the front opening on the hood
on some civilian models in the 64-65 yrs.?

    thank you

    mark.

All leftover military stuff, not actually used on civvy models.

    ???

AFAIK the bow mounts on the rear corners were strictly a civvy thing, The military tops used bows that mounted into the indents over the wheel openings. These were a carryover from the 2s & 3s-

I guess I've never actually seen a top that used the bow mounts..
The pockets over the wheel openings, I've seen..(military)

As I recall, there are "rigid" fabric tops that use those pockets for the bows. The top would have had a bow at the middle pockets and at the back pockets. These tops are rigid vs. the convertible type you usually see today. I had thought this was the military style, but according to the above posts, maybe not.

Those middle pockets were handy for me - having no roll bar I made a bow from conduit to mount a bikini top on my '57CJ.

So would the last year having these brackets be 1966.
My two 67.s have the two over the wheel wells but not the rear ,on the corners.
    The 1965 has them both

darn jeeps always something new to break the mold........

"The purchase of Kaiser-Jeep by American Motors in 1971, and the emphasis on style, may have spelled the end for the seldom-used bow sockets."

Speculation. I think this has nothing to do with the AMC takeover. My impression it that these were an early feature, and were gone long before 1971. There's precedent for loss of vestigial features in this era, for example the battery box and hood notch.

My 55 doesn't have the bow pockets. I seem to remember reading somewhere that on the civilian models you had the option of a soft top or NO soft top. If you got one without a top of any kind they didn't have the bow pockets.

No, I don't remember where I read that at or I would include the reference :(

This has been kicked around here before IIRC the majority opinion was that the tops were dealer installed options and it would not make sense that the bow pockets would/would not be installed at the factory. There was however a factory hard top option, could be those jeeps left without the pockets. Tonk is a also '55 and also didn't have any sign of the pockets, I always assumed that they weren't there from the factory. Certainly many factory photos show jeeps without them but as others have stated factory photos showed lots of things that didn't happen in production vehicles. In Tonk's case however while I was rebuilding the tub once the paint was off there were clear marks where there had been pockets welded on.

You may be right Tim, the 3B page makes reference to a switchover to Whiteco folding tops as the preferred option in '62 but doesn't state when the canvas tops were dropped. In point of fact checking a '71 parts manual the bow pockets were still listed in the body section (Group 31-08 p/n 972631 BRACKET, top bow rear, assy), this doesn't mean that they were actually being installed up to '71 but most interestingly the canvas top kit was still listed as well (Group 35-17 p/n 958889-kit , Body top).
