1965 cj-5 ?

I just found another nice jeep cj-5 .supposed to be a 1965
Would someone know what the two holders on the two rear corners are supposed to be used for
i have also seen this on a 1964 tuxedo park,
were they used for the soft top ?

As I recall, there are "rigid" fabric tops that use those pockets for the bows. The top would have had a bow at the middle pockets and at the back pockets. These tops are rigid vs. the convertible type you usually see today. I had thought this was the military style, but according to the above posts, maybe not.

 

Those middle pockets were handy for me - having no roll bar I made a bow from conduit to mount a bikini top on my '57CJ.

 

So would the last year having these brackets be 1966.
My two 67.s have the two over the wheel wells but not the rear ,on the corners.
The 1965 has them both

Speculation. I think this has nothing to do with the AMC takeover. My impression it that these were an early feature, and were gone long before 1971. There's precedent for loss of vestigial features in this era, for example the battery box and hood notch.

 

My 55 doesn't have the bow pockets. I seem to remember reading somewhere that on the civilian models you had the option of a soft top or NO soft top. If you got one without a top of any kind they didn't have the bow pockets.

my 1966-cj6a has them on the rear,and it came with a hardtopwhich has never been taken off,it has a factory spotweld
