throughly confused now..

    Does it seem like I bounce from one area oof my Jeep to another when it concerns working on stuff? Last week it was sparkplugs, then body work, now I just read some threads on steering problems. What exactly is a "Saginaw" conversion? My '53 has the death wobble in the steering pretty bad and if there is anyway to fix it, I would. I bought a "steering repair kit" off of eBay that has several box's of bushings and seals etc that is supposed to fix the wobble, but I'm kinda chicken to try fixing it all by myself.

    Power steering would be awesome in this little guy, but I think that it would be pretty expensive to do. Am I right?

    Depending on what you want - how you do it, the cost can range from a couple hundred to over a grand. As to what it is - I posted pics for zed on my webshots to get an idea.

    Yes - it fixes the 'death wobble'.

    This, 11" brakes with dual MC, Cage, OD, and the V6 is what I do to all my riggs at a minimum.

    How do you install an overdrive? I have a Warner T90 3 speed. I'm assuming it would have to be replaced.. :)

    See what I mean about jumping around! I have so much I want to do, just not enough knowledge!

    Ooooo, really? How does one go about getting one of those? I would LOVE to have another gear in my M38A1. Third gear at 45 to 50 mph with 5:38 gears is LOUD.. :)

    They are available new or used. Try Herm the OVERDRIVE GUY :)

    They only work with the Dana 18 transfer case, but are a great upgrade.

    What is the difference between a Spicer 18 and a Dana 18 transfer case?
    I'm sorta kinda new here, but how do I get in touch with Herm?
     
  9. They are the same thing. It's a Dana-Spicer Model 18 Transfer case.

    Just went out and snapped two pics for those wondering about the Overdrive. Mine is an original Warn model, but the Saturn is exactly the same. ;)

    It's a neat setup because it's a planetary transmission and it splits all the gears - essentially a transmission inline between the transmission and transfer case. I wonder if the Dana 18 was designed with this in mind?

    The QuadraTrac (BW1339) uses the same sort of planetary transmission setup for low range.

    Cool. Thanks. So, basically once in 3rd gear and crusin', just shift into your "extra" gear?

    Thanks for the help btw. This is now on my list of "Stuff I want to do to my Jeep." :)

    also there is a twin shift dana-spicer 18 and single lever 18. both are basically the same inside from what i can tell. the single lever is on the later models of cj5 and is what my 69 came with, also probably the 70. they may have changed to the dana-spicer 20 in 71 or 72? 18 has a nice lowrange.

    diff between the dbl lever and the single lever is that the left hand lever is front axle (2-4 wd) the right is hi-neutral and low ranges. in the single it is 2high-4high-neutral-4low in a straight line.

    actually it's even cooler than just a "4th or 5th gear"

    you can split shift. 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5 etc. for me with a t14 trans and 3 speeds and the 31" tires somtimes 2nd gear is too high for the neighborhood so i keep it in 1st and the od in high. perfect.

    also for climbing sometimes in 4wd low 1 is too high a spin and the engine lugs or stalls in 2, 1 and od in 4wd low settles in just fine. you can do that with any of em to match the control, speed and torque by feel you need. heh, haven't tried split shifting in reverse tho.

    Neato! On my list for sure! Now, to shift gears again..hehe, back to my steering question. What exactly is a manual saginaw steering and how would it help my Jeep? (just for the record, 1953 M38A1). Like I mentioned previous, powersteering would be awesome, but I can live with manual steering if I could get rid of the 1/2 turn of play I have. Anything else that can be done is just gravy.

    It's the manual steering box from the Saginaw division of GM. Same approximate size and shape as a Saginaw power gear, but not power assisted.

    and what is better about a Saginaw versus the stock steering? Are we talking just the steering box?

    Stock steering is a Ross box, mounted at the end of the steering column. There are more linkages and connections than with a Saginaw swap.

    A Saginaw system is what's on newer Jeeps - with the Steering box ahead of the grille on the frame rail.

    The stock setup can also be gone through - box rebuilt, tie rod ends changed out, etc.

    Oh, okay. Well, Saginaw isn't really an option for me then, not with the Buick 3.8 residing under the hood. I believe the headers would be in the way of a Saginaw box.

    On the contrary - usually it's the Ross box that's in the way of other exhaust systems. It's the reason the OE 225 used a passenger side manifold flipped backwards.

    My 6 has a saggy swap - it was part of getting the 4.3 in there:
