I'm interested in the 74 at this place:

    http://www.countryclassiccars.com/spcars_348.htm

Has anyone here done business with them before(or know someone who has)? A quick search I find the usual pluses and minuses, but looking for anyone here's opinion.

Anyone see anything that stands out as not quite right(I see the hood latches are missing for example)?

The price seems average form other searches I've done, or am I way off the mark?

    Thanks for your time.

The exhaust routing seems... bad. Hanging down on the driver side. I'd look closely for other stuff out of place or poorly done based on that.

    You ain't kiddin' R)

Offer them 3. Then paint the windshield frame black the way it is supposed to be, buy some hood latches, fix the exhaust, (that left one is droopy) wheel centers should be black as well, then strip the paint from the black rubber fender flares before it starts peeling, left front tire looks a little bald (may just be a shadow) and you should be good to go.

in NJ that would be a solid deal at $3500-4500.

Seat brackets are also supposed to be black aren't they? I know the flairs are supposed to be, just wondering what would be good for taking off the paint that won't leave them looking cloudy afterwards.

    Observations:
    1. Missing the wiper motor cover.
    2. Obviously been repainted, check the body thoroughly for shoddy rust repair or copious amounts of bondo. Crawl under it and look at the body mounts and check the frame for rust.
    3. The 304 is a nice engine, looks like it has power steering, which is also a plus. No power brakes, but that can be upgraded pretty easily.
    4. Tail lights are not original, have been changed. Again, check the rear panels thoroughly for bondo.
    5. The location of the Jeep logo on the side indicates an early 74 model, they switched midway through the 74 model year to a lower location.
    6. Contrary to the remarks above, the windshield frame should be body color on a 74 and not black. 73 was the last year of the black windshield frame.

Theres WAY better deals in San Diego on craigslist. It would be worth the drive. Saw one for $2200 wth a winch and had beedlocks to go with.

    I think you are right.

I've seen numerous original photo's and original marketing documents for a '74 that show a black windshield. If I had an electronic copy of the marketing brochure I have I'd paste a photo of one for you.

No, I disagree. I have just finished stripping the paint on my June, 1974-built Jeep and can guarantee you that the windshield frame was never black, it was always Fairway Green Metallic. If you can find evidence of a 74 with an original black windshield I'd like to see it, but every image I've seen shows 73 with black and 74 up with body color. Perhaps the very early 74-model year remained black, but without question by June they were body color.

Maybe it's just a Renegade combo...all the pics that I'm attaching are '74 models...and they all happen to be Renegades.

The one with "EarlyCJ5" on it used to be part of the banner here...but I know it's in the 74 Marketing Brochure...because I have one. I don't have any more validated color photo's, only one's posted by other owners that may or may not be original.

From the 74 Shop Manual, p.A1

Yes, as I said, it must have been a mid-year switch because I know by June they had gone to body color. The only way to know for sure would be to compare known original models with build dates. I know for certain that mine was originally body color, as were the hinges. The promotional materials and sales brochures are of course produced very early in the model year and would therefore not capture a mid-year change. We know Jeep commonly did mid-year changes, such as the moving of the Jeep logo in mid-74, which is the same as the 75 version. Another way to look at it would be that 74 was a changeover year, with early 74's being essentially just like 73's and late model years incorporating some (but not all) of the 75 changes.

I don't think the OP's potential jeep is worth the asking price. A couple things no one has mentioned, the rear picture shows the tail lights are not even mounted to the jeep. They are mounted to the spare tire......rack for lack of a better descrition.

Also, below the light on the drivers side, rear pict, it looks like a section of sheet metal has been screwed or poprivited in place on the tub.

rear axle has a shackle lift I think. The loation of the tire to the wheel well in the back is wrong. As a matter of fact, the whole jeep looks kinda strange. Almost out of porportions. Course the photo might have been stretched or maybe it's just the angle of the camera.

I don't know but I believe I'd pass at that price. Now if it ran good, and the body and frame were in good shape, it would be worth maybe 2 grand to me. But I'm cheap.

I think you can do better.......

Definitely not worth the price. I bought this
    [IMG]
for $4500 in Colorado, where Jeep prices are higher than most anywhere. It's a '77, showing 45,xxx on the clock. I believe it's original miles.

Yeah, that price seems pretty steep to me. I browse CL all the time here in WA and there are WAY better deals then that. Like other guys are saying, If you want it bad enough, sleep on it, go over it real well and make sure you still want it then offer them 3 grand. If they don't take that, keep your money and keep lookin.

I expect that 'classic car' sellers (like the one with this Jeep) will always want higher prices than you can find private party.

I'm not real impressed with this one ... the sloppy appearance reflects on the previous owner.

I'd look far afield for something better. IMO you can get a really nice one for $4000, and you'll be ahead, even if you have to go a long ways to get it, or have it shipped to you.
