I scored my axles

For my Cj6 springover project. I found a set, rear is narrow track dana 44 with passenger side offset for my dana 18. It has one piece axles, so it should be 30 spline. It also has 11 inch drum brakes. The front is a narrow track 44 with open knuckles, hubs, disc. brakes and flat top knuckles that I can drill for high steer. The only bad so far is the gear, I'll need gears and lockers, but the price was right. I'll be selling my stock running gear, rear 44, front 27 with large brakes, 3.73 gear, rear power lock. What is a fair price for these, working condition, the front has cutlas lockout hubs.

Sounds like a great score what was the front axle out of?

The guy said the axles came from a 72 wagoneer? I'm not sure if those would have been stock axles or something changed out or upgraded at one point. Near as I can tell that year is one of those years that could have had those axles stock but probably not?

My '77 Cherokee had 44's front and rear.
Same thing as a Wagoneer. Different trim package.
Woulda thought those would be wide axle, not narrow though.

    Can't be a '72 - they used a closed-knuckle Dana 30.

Should have 6 lugs if it's an open-knuckle Wagoneer axle.

There are narrow track and wide track FSJ axles. The wide-track Cherokee (with the flares) and the J-10 use the same front axle. The Wagoneer and the narrow-track Cherokee (no flares) have the same axles. The J-10 rear is wider than all of them.

Weren't the J-10 and Wagoneer from the mid '60's to early '70's 5 lug hubs?

I tried to do a bunch or research to see what vehicles came with what running gear. The more I read the more confused I became. I'll bet someone upgraded the axles under the wagoneer, at least the front. I'll have to ask my friend what lug pattern is on the axles. I don't really care if they are 5 or 6 lug as long as both are the same. I'd presume if they are 5 lug they would be cj narrow track axles? 6 lug they would be from an old quadratrack wagoneer. The guy I bought them from said he pulled them from a 72 wagoneer.

Yes, but they are all closed knuckle design. There's no open knuckle FSJ axles that aren't 6 lug.

It's possible to build a 5-lug set from a pre-74 rear and a later open front 44 using Ford hubs, but I don't know much more about it than that.

If they are factory axles from a '72 Wagoneer they will be 5 lug. However, the front will be a closed knuckle Dana 30 with drum brakes. 1974 was the first year for the D44 front in a Wagoneer, and it has disks and 6 lugs.

Nothing wrong with 6 lugs as long as you don't already have your wheels.

The wide track CJ used the D30 front and AMC 20 rear (except for a very few in the last year), so if it's a 44 front, it's not CJ.

Open knuckle dana 44 axles supposedly started showing up in 72 or 73 in wagoneers.:?

  14. And the front should measure 61" the rear 58" WMS to WMS if its the open knuckle. If the front is closed knuckle it's probably not 30 spline.

The front is open knuckle, so not sure what spline it would be, hopefully 30 spline. The front axle is 61" wms to wms. The rear is a one piece design, so hopefull it will be 30 spline. The rear is 59" wms to wms is what my friend measured. I'm sure they will work fine.

Could they be scout axles? They'd be 5 lug, open knuckle, and about that width.

They could be I guess, but they came from a wagoneer.
