One tough cookie!!! Dana 27

    I got my front driveshaft in last week (used) and it fits perfectly. Well since i had th efront driveshaft off and my dana 27 pinion seal is leaking i decided to replace it.

    NOPE!!!!!!!!

    I first had to clean all the mud and sludge off the yoke to get at th enut. Then i got out th eimpact gun and layed it on the yoke nut. NOPE!! wouldnt budge. Tried again.. and again... and again. Then tried a regular ratchet with a breaker bar. NOPE. still nothing, the jepp was rolling when i tried to turn it. The nback on the nut with the impact gun. NOPE..tried for another 20 minutes and nothing. Man is that nut on tightly. I gave up and installed the drivehsaft and decided to try it again at another time, i will live with this leak, just a little annoyance that has been going on.

    But what have you guys done to loosen the stupid pinion nut?? I do have the torch set around, but i do not want to cook anything in the differecial. What do you guys suggest??

    mb82 I feel great!

    well i have done the rear pinion seal on both rear 44s i have. the only way they would come off was breaker bar + 6ft peice of black iron pipe. then it was like turning a brand new nut.

    no yoke about it!

    If you have a large pipe wrench use it to keep the yoke from turning(either against the frame or concrete) and use an impact socket and a large cheater bar to work the nut. Spray with a penetrating oil several hours ahead of time. I had to use a large puller to get my yoke off- it trashed the yoke, mine had never been removed after years of the seal leaking. Good Luck!

    Just what "willysnut" stated, You need something to hold the yoke solid...then use the impact wrench. If you already did this and it didn't come off.....then what "Glenn" stated, Bigger impact.....Now, if you have already done this......MORE AIR PRESSURE!! R) R) Good Luck!! Glenn......

    I'll add my 2 cents... I have got them off by putting a breaker bar on them, bracing that against the driveway and pulling forward... now, don't try this at home... make sure you are driving the right way to LOOSEN the nut.. and be advised SOMETHING will give (hope it is the nut)...it did work.

    There is also a tool made to hold the yoke while turning the nut, it can be seen on page 294 of the service manual, tool C-3281. I picked one up used, it comes in handy the 1 time every 5 years you need it.

    I already use the methoid to keep the yoke still, didnt work. i probably could use a bigger impact but i dont have it. i will soak it with penetrating fluid. I defiantely do not want to torch it

    I find that buying a quart of gearlube every couple of months works just fine.

    You aint kiddin, i have been working on it for a bit now. It has been out of service since the firts week of June. Crossing my figners that i will be a drivin it this weekend. I get my driveshaft in this week and should get the remaining pieces of metal to finish my tranny tunnel, then just remount seats and test drive it. :)

    Bigger breaker bar should do it. I have a 3/4 drive bar with about a 3 foot handle that works great, but a piece of pipe to lenthen yours should work.

    Man... i was using my high lift handle, and that thing usually busts everything free. I even checked in case there was a cotter pin there to keep things from moving :(

    To tell you the truth i believe i have had it off years back to get rid of a leak when i first got the jeep. And i didnt have any air tools or anything to torque it down, probably all the mud and water got to it. i may have to touch the tip of it with the torch just to heat things up

    See if you can borrow a "torque-multiplier" bar. Works awsome, if you can find one (looks like a breaker bar, only with gears inside".

    sounds like the "blue wrench" to the rescue!

    heat the nut till it glows red hot, then spray wd40 on the pinion, lastly use the 6ft pipe on the 3/4" breaker bar.
