Hey, New Jeepster owner!

    Hey Guys, i'm a new jeepster commando owner, i traded this fellow my '87 cherokee (automatic, and everything stock) for this beauty right here- it's a '68 jeepster commando ( my Dream jeep) with some good stuff on it. it's got custom made wheels, with 35" tires on it, a leaf springed suspension (Not sure actually how high it is) a mean welded front bumper, and a newer roll bar, and i forget the name of the transfer case, but the fellow told me it was worth a whole lot.. a dana something, and it's got the buick V6 in it - i think it's the stock dauntless 225?? not sure anywho - i'm completely new to owning one of these, and being involved in so much off roading equipment. i'm in need of some answers for my questions though. i need to know where i can find the VIN # on it, it does not have a title for it so i need to find the VIN for the bill of sale so i can work torwards getting the title. any suggestions would be great, thanks!

    Welcome from up the road in Asheville,NC. Technically I'm not from there but I manage to spend a couple of months a year there. Your VIN should be on a plate attached to the firewall just down and to the right of the master cylinder. The front makers would indicate it's probably a late 69 or early 70 since it has no side marker lights in the fenders. It may also have a tag on the driver side door opening up by the hinges if it hasn't been painted over. Stock transfer case is a Dana 20. Might be someone put a Dana 300 into it.

    Hi zach,
    Pack Rat knows Commando's very well and I suspect he is right on with the model year of production. Ckeck out the sticky thread at the top of this forum, if you find a V.I.N. number on yours post it up there. Cool looking red Comando you got there.

    My Commando is minus both the vin plate and the sticker:mad:
    But I did get a title.
    Isn't the vin stamped on the top of the frame somewheres?

    Just the sequential. It's on the right top side of the frame rail somewhere in the engine mount area give or take. Depends who was stamping the frames that day :). Wouldn't be heard to "guess" what the first part of the VIN would be, probably something like 8705F17******.

    ok, i got the vin number, should i just post it on the VIN thread ? or do PM it to someone... also - i took alot of pictures all around of everything i could think of taking a picture of and will post those here later on today. again thanks for the help guys!

    yeah, we're literally tapped out here. that's the only reason i can't crank my jeepster up!! i just dropped $75 on a battery, and it turns, just NO gas.... and we don't have any at any of our gas stations........... any who here are some pictures that i took.

    Here's the get up. the hand park brake line needs to be re-attached aswell as the front differential's arm needs to be put back on. i have couple more questions, the shifter doesn't have anything written on it - and the fellows that sold it to me told me that it was tricky, that i had to pull down then back up to get it in drive, not really sure i understand what he meant... also i knows this seems like a nit picky question, but do you know what kind of gas mileage this sucker should get? with the 35" wheels, i know it will make a difference, but any ideas? thanks !! rat pack, if you're interested in some AWESOME music there's a band called hoot and hellmouth that's playing here in greenville on the 7th, and they are seriously a great show, it's free in downtown greenville at the bohemian, and i think you may enjoy yourself - here's their myspace http://www.myspace.com/hootshellmouth

    :shock: Springover with a monoleaf? Yikes!

    I have a strong feeling you'll have axle-wrap issues once you do get it cranked up and drive it.

    Kind of sounds like something is loose on the shifter,either on the shifter itself, the external linkage at the trans or internal. These things are pretty straight forward. Should be Park all the way forward, reverse, neutral, drive, second then low.
    As far as gas mileage, generally V6's are in the 15 to 20 MPG range, 35's are going to probably drop you down to the lower range maybe a little less. I kind of suspect the springover had something to do with the front driveshaft coming apart ;).

    ha i have no idea what the complictaion would be with the monleaf and a springover? like i said, i've never gotten that deep into it, would love for someone to learn me on it. also the driveshaft was off 'cause they were trying to put it into one his cjs, but of course it didn't fit. also - i finally got some gas for it yesterday, and it's turning over, but not cranking up.. i know there are a gazillion reasons why that could happen -but any suggestions on something i could check first? thanks guys!
