Can someone tell me the year of a Jeep body I am looking at to buy. The body has no tailgate but the fuel tank is under the drivers seat.

Does the body curve in just forward of the door? and does it have a fuel fill by the driver side that is horizontal or angeled?

Sounds like it could either be a Renegade II, or possiblly an M38-A1. If it has the glove box to the left of the steering wheel, a cowl mounted battery box, and a circular indent (slave recepticle) on the lower portion of the passenger side of the cowl panel, then it's an 'A1 tub. If it doesn't have these features (ie: looks like a normal CJ tub), then I would guess it was a Ren II.

    Hmmmm, I didn't consider that it could be a Flattie....... . I assumed it would be for a '5.

Could be an MB tub or could be a later CJ-5 tub as well.

Tough to nail down a year without pictures. Even then unless it's a RII (1971) it would only be possible to give a range of possible years.

When you say no tailgate do mean it has a solid piece in the rear? Pics would be a big help.

That I know of, there was never a RII with under seat tanks. Also I thought that sometime prior to 71 the feds had a regulation that did not allow the under seat tanks. Wasn't there some earlier military JEEPs that had under seat tanks and no tail gate?

    mb82 I feel great!

Could it be a nonfactory replacement body.

Absolutely right Mike, I wasn't thinking.

M38A1s fit the bill as mentioned above.

MBs do too. But there is no gas filler on the side.

So sounds like an M38A1 now that I'm thinking about this clearly.

Assuming it is steel and not a fiberglass or replacement body. Either more details or a pic would be helpful.

The Jeep I am looking at does have a fuel fill below driver side door I will have to look to see if it is angled or not. I will try to get pictures of this Jeep in couple days.

    Thanks
